Elevated Calm: Where Architecture Meets Horizon
Perched above the city lights of Los Angeles, 9342 Sierra Mar is a contemporary sanctuary designed by Whipple Russell Architects to celebrate warmth, tranquility, and seamless connection to water and sky. Tucked into the coveted Bird Streets of the Hollywood Hills, the home captures a rare equilibrium between iconic California modernism and tactile comfort.
“We didn’t want to design a cold glass box,” shares architect Marc Whipple in an interview with Luxury Houses Magazine. “Sierra Mar needed to reflect both clarity and intimacy—like a retreat that breathes.”
Wrapped in natural materials and glass, the residence unfolds horizontally, allowing every space to open toward the skyline while embracing elements of wood, stone, and light.

Architectural Warmth Framed by Water
The soul of the house resides at the edge of the water. The infinity-edge pool sits flush with the floor of the living room terrace, creating a visual and spatial dialogue that erases boundaries between indoor luxury and outdoor serenity.
“Our goal was to create an edge that doesn’t feel like an ending but a transition,” explains Whipple. “The pool isn’t just an amenity—it’s part of the architectural gesture.”
Throughout the main floor, large retractable glass panels disappear into the walls, inviting cross breezes and merging the main living areas with a stone-clad outdoor lounge and water feature. The home’s palette—warm walnut, white plaster, honed travertine—reinforces the tactile calm that defines the residence.

Spatial Flow and Sculptural Precision
At 9342 Sierra Mar, every line is intentional. A linear axis runs from the entrance through the heart of the house to the infinity pool beyond, guiding movement and framing views. The open-plan kitchen, dining area, and living room are arranged to encourage flow, light, and ease of conversation.
“We designed this home like a series of gentle reveals,” says Whipple. “There’s no single moment of arrival—just a continuous unfolding of space and light.”
An elegant floating staircase anchors the interior with sculptural clarity, leading to the upper-level bedrooms that feel both connected and secluded. Glass balustrades and oak floors maintain the home’s soft, modern character.

Private Volumes with Cinematic Views
The principal suite opens to a private balcony with sweeping views of downtown Los Angeles and the Pacific horizon beyond. Full-height glass captures both sunrise and sunset, while sheer drapery softens light throughout the day. A bespoke bathroom suite includes a freestanding tub that appears to float above the city lights.
Secondary bedrooms are tucked along the west wing, each with ensuite bathrooms and access to terraces. Below, a media lounge, wine cellar, and wellness space—including a steam room—offer retreat-like moments without leaving the home.
“This house is about framing experience,” notes Whipple. “From the bedroom to the terrace, every space is a lens onto something bigger—whether it’s nature, reflection, or relaxation.”

Living at the Edge of Design and Nature
With its serene presence and elemental materiality, 9342 Sierra Mar is more than a house—it’s an architectural expression of effortless California living. It offers a rare sense of warmth without weight, fluidity without excess, and privacy without isolation.
“What makes Sierra Mar unique,” concludes Whipple, “is not how much it shows, but how much it reveals slowly—how it makes you feel at ease without trying too hard.”
This is Hollywood Hills living redefined: modern, refined, and always in conversation with water, horizon, and the essence of home.
