The Project “Casa MS” Information:

Oceanfront Luxury in Portugal’s Algarve

Overlooking the turquoise waters of Portugal’s Algarve coastline, Casa MS by Vasco Vieira Arquitectos is a modernist composition of glass, stone, and timber that redefines seaside living. Designed for a family seeking both privacy and an ever-present connection to the Atlantic, the residence is an architectural dialogue between openness and shelter, lightness and solidity.

“Our approach was to frame the sea as the ever-changing artwork of the house,” Vasco Vieira shared with Luxury Houses Magazine. “Every line, material, and opening was considered to ensure that the ocean becomes part of the daily experience, whether you’re in the living room, by the pool, or waking up in the master suite.”

Sculpted to the Landscape

Casa MS sits on an elevated plot, its horizontal planes echoing the horizon beyond. The street-facing façade is intentionally discreet, offering privacy through natural stone walls and louvered screens, while the ocean-facing side opens fully with expansive glazing and cantilevered terraces.

The architectural massing is broken into layered volumes, allowing breezes to flow freely and creating shaded outdoor living spaces. “We wanted the home to breathe with its surroundings, to be cooled naturally and lit softly,” explains Vieira. “The Algarve sun is powerful, so the overhangs and pergolas were essential to provide comfort while keeping the design visually light.”

Interior Flow and Material Harmony

Inside, the main living space is an open-plan composition where kitchen, dining, and lounge areas merge under a continuous ceiling of warm timber slats. Pale limestone flooring flows seamlessly to the terraces, erasing the boundary between interior and exterior.

Custom cabinetry in walnut and minimalist white surfaces balance warmth with purity, while full-height sliding glass doors pocket away to allow uninterrupted movement to the outdoor decks. “We designed the interiors to feel almost weightless,” says Vieira. “The materials are natural and tactile, yet the spaces themselves are free of unnecessary clutter, so the focus remains on light, air, and view.”

Outdoor Living as a Year-Round Experience

The heart of Casa MS is its oceanfront terrace, complete with an infinity pool that visually merges with the sea. Multiple seating zones—shaded lounges, sun decks, and an alfresco dining area—create a resort-like atmosphere that suits both intimate family moments and large gatherings.

A floating staircase connects the main terrace to a lower garden level with additional recreational spaces. “We imagined the outdoor areas as extensions of the living room,” notes Vieira. “It’s not just a place to look at the ocean—it’s a place to feel immersed in it.”

Private Suites with Panoramic Views

The master suite occupies a prime corner of the upper floor, featuring wraparound glazing, a private terrace, and a spa-like bathroom clad in marble and warm wood. Guest suites are positioned for privacy yet maintain ocean views, each with its own balcony and en-suite bath.

Sustainability and Craftsmanship

Casa MS integrates passive design strategies such as cross ventilation, deep overhangs, and operable shading systems, reducing reliance on mechanical cooling. Locally sourced stone and sustainably harvested timber ensure that the home remains connected to the region’s natural resources.

“Sustainability is not just about technology—it’s about designing with respect for place,” Vieira emphasizes. “Casa MS is built to endure, both in materials and in the timelessness of its design.”
