Positioned atop a gentle slope in one of Beverly Hills’ most coveted enclaves, Coldwater Canyon by Whipple Russell Architects is an extraordinary testament to wellness-forward luxury living. From its serene architectural gestures to its immersive garden and wellness spaces, the estate presents a new definition of modern Californian retreat—a residence designed not only to be admired, but deeply felt.
“We envisioned a home that feels like you’re arriving at a boutique wellness resort,” explains architect Marc Whipple in a conversation with Luxury Houses Magazine. “This was about calmness, about soft transitions between architecture, nature, and lifestyle.”
Wrapped in walls of glass, layered stone, and warm wood elements, the home embraces its canyon site in a composition that feels both anchored and airy.

Organic Architecture with a Resort Soul
From the moment one enters the estate through its minimalist entry sequence, the sense of orchestration is clear. The house unfolds as a series of interconnected pavilions—each designed to engage light, views, and movement. Lines are crisp, but never cold; the material palette of limestone, walnut, and charcoal steel grounds the home in both refinement and earthiness.
“We didn’t want the house to dominate the land—it needed to be in constant conversation with it,” Whipple notes. “Every line we drew was in service of balance, not bravado.”
Large overhangs extend outward, casting elegant shadow patterns that shift across the day. Gardens are threaded through every view corridor. An infinity-edge saltwater pool is positioned to mirror the horizon, visually blurring the edge between architecture and atmosphere.

Wellness as a Spatial Narrative
At the heart of Coldwater Canyon lies its devotion to well-being. The design was conceived not merely as a home, but as a restorative ecosystem. Anchoring the residence is a spa courtyard that includes a cold plunge, sauna, outdoor rain shower, and meditation deck shaded by olive trees. Adjacent wellness spaces include a glass-wrapped gym, yoga terrace, and soundproofed therapy room.
“Each zone has a purpose—to calm, to restore, to inspire,” shares the project’s interior architect. “The architecture supports flow, both physically and emotionally.”
Skylights and clerestory windows ensure light is omnipresent, even in transition spaces. Water features echo throughout—reflecting pools, weeping walls, and rills that link one volume to the next. The effect is immersive yet subtle, allowing nature to always remain the primary visual anchor.

Private, Layered, and Intuitively Livable
The main living level of Coldwater Canyon is structured for seamless living and entertaining. A voluminous great room blends into an outdoor lounge with a double-sided fireplace. The kitchen is minimal yet rich in tactile detail—monolithic stone islands, integrated storage, and custom walnut cabinetry throughout. Five bedrooms, including a serene primary suite, offer direct garden or terrace access.
“The plan is like a quiet rhythm,” Whipple reflects. “Spaces reveal themselves naturally, always with a connection to light or landscape.”
A sculptural floating staircase descends to the lower level, where one finds a media lounge, wine cellar, and wellness suite. Every room, even those below grade, maintains connection to filtered light and framed views.
