- Location: Vila Franca de Xira, Portugal
- Designed by: Humberto Conde Arquitectos
A Modern Residence Rooted in Rural Serenity
Set within the scenic hills of Vila Franca de Xira, the Single Family House by Humberto Conde Arquitectos offers a contemporary reinterpretation of rural living. With its elongated horizontal form, generous glazing, and sculpted stonework, the home merges modern minimalism with the softness of the surrounding landscape.

Speaking with Luxury Houses Magazine, architect Humberto Conde explains: “Our intention was to design a house that rests on the land. The horizontality, the stone, and the transparency all help it settle naturally into the rural setting.”

A Sculptural Front Façade Framed by Nature
The front façade of the Single Family House is a bold and elegant composition. Wide and symmetrical, it blends natural stone, concrete, and glass into a refined architectural frame. A central staircase creates a ceremonial entrance sequence, while landscaped beds flank the approach with greenery that softens the lines of the structure.

Large glazed surfaces bring in abundant natural light and frame expansive views of the rolling countryside. These openings dissolve boundaries, allowing interior life to blend effortlessly with the outdoor environment.

A Luxurious Outdoor Realm: Infinity Pool & Wooden Deck
Anchoring the leisure area at the front of the home is a sleek infinity pool that appears to float toward the horizon. A wooden deck with sun loungers and sculptural white outdoor furnishings creates a serene vantage point for relaxation and contemplation.

A stone pathway weaves through the gardens, linking the pool deck to the entrance and terraced outdoor rooms. Overhead, the flat roof extends outward with a striking overhang, creating shade and architectural depth across the deck.

In his conversation with Luxury Houses Magazine, Conde notes: “The outdoor spaces were conceived as inhabited platforms. Around the pool, the house becomes a landscape device—a place to experience the light, the views, and the calm of the site.”

Materiality: Where Modernity Meets Rustic Warmth
The Single Family House embraces a restrained yet expressive palette that enhances its rural context:
- Natural stone adds texture and permanence.
- Glass walls introduce lightness and continuity with nature.
- Concrete volumes create clarity and balance.
- Wooden accents bring warmth and tactile richness.

A distinctive circular opening in the porch roof becomes a sculptural gesture—channeling daylight to the deck below and creating an ever-changing play of shadow and light.

Architecture Shaped by Topography
Positioned on a gently sloped site, the home engages with the landscape through subtle level changes and terraced outdoor zones. The topography allows for layered garden spaces, framed views, and moments of both openness and privacy.

Around the house, curated landscaping of lawns, shrubs, and ornamental vegetation enhances the calming rural setting while ensuring seclusion where needed.

Interiors That Extend the Landscape
Inside, the architectural language continues with minimalist lines, natural materials, and a warm, understated color palette. Extensive glazing ensures that the interiors remain visually connected to the outdoors throughout the day.

Every room becomes a place to observe the shifting light and movement of the landscape.
As Conde tells Luxury Houses Magazine: “The house is a platform for living with the landscape. Indoors and outdoors aren’t treated as separate realms—they are two sides of the same experience.”

A Sanctuary of Contemporary Calm
The Single Family House stands as a refined example of contemporary rural living. Carefully composed volumes, a harmonious palette, and a deep connection with nature define this peaceful sanctuary.

A home of clarity, serenity, and thoughtful design, it showcases how architecture can elevate simple living through material sensitivity, spatial generosity, and a profound respect for place.
