A Home Designed for an Active, Social Family Lifestyle
Conceived for an established family accustomed to hosting permanent or frequent guests, Sunstone House by MIK Architecture embraces flexibility as a core design principle. Rather than prioritizing form alone, the project responds to how the family lives—entertaining year-round, sharing spaces with visitors, and valuing a strong connection between indoor comfort and outdoor leisure.
“Sunstone House was envisioned as a home that could effortlessly adapt to different rhythms of daily life,” explains a lead architect at MIK Architecture. “From intimate family moments to extended stays with guests, the house needed to feel welcoming at every scale.”

Turning a Wide, Shallow Lot Into an Architectural Advantage
Set on a wide yet relatively shallow site, the primary challenge was to give the home a grand presence from the street without consuming valuable outdoor space at the rear of the property. Rather than centering the structure, the architects positioned the house along one side of the lot, allowing the landscape to become an integral part of the composition.
This strategic placement enabled the development of an L-shaped plan, with the architecture embracing the outdoor areas rather than competing with them.
“Instead of treating the yard as leftover space, we designed the house to frame it,” the architects note. “The result is a home that feels expansive without being oversized.”

An L-Shaped Plan Organized Around a Central Pool
At the heart of the design lies a central swimming pool, positioned within the bend of the L-shaped structure. Opening toward the side yard, the pool area reads as a private backyard oasis, despite its unconventional orientation.
This configuration creates a continuous visual and physical relationship between interior living spaces and the outdoors. From the main living room and bar area, views extend directly toward the pool, reinforcing a sense of openness and calm.
“The pool acts as a spatial anchor,” says MIK Architecture. “It connects the architecture, the landscape, and the social life of the home.”

Double-Height Living Spaces and Seamless Transitions
Inside, the public areas are defined by a 15-foot ceiling height, flooding the interior with natural light and amplifying the sense of volume. Large openings dissolve the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing activities to flow effortlessly from one environment to the other.
Whether relaxing in the living room, gathering at the bar, or entertaining outdoors, the experience remains cohesive and uninterrupted.
“Our intention was to eliminate the feeling of separation,” the architects explain. “You should feel equally comfortable inside or outside, without ever losing visual connection.”

A Highly Efficient Service Core
Functionality plays a crucial role in the home’s success. A three-car garage opens directly into a dedicated service zone that connects the laundry room, staff quarters, pantry, and kitchen. This thoughtful organization ensures efficient circulation and discreet movement throughout the house.
From arriving home to hosting events, every transition has been designed to feel intuitive and effortless.

Moving upstairs, the transition between levels is marked by a serene moment of pause: a framed view of a heritage tree visible from the staircase. This natural focal point offers a psychological reset, subtly shifting the atmosphere from social spaces to more private realms.
“Architecture can guide emotion,” reflects MIK Architecture. “That moment of stillness helps slow the pace as you move upward.”

A Private Upper Level Focused on Comfort and Retreat
The second floor accommodates secondary bedrooms, a family lounge, and an expansive primary suite wing designed as a true retreat. The main suite includes a private studio, a walk-in closet with an integrated security room, and a spa-like bathroom complete with an oversized shower, double vanities, and a freestanding bathtub.
This upper level balances togetherness and privacy, offering shared family spaces alongside deeply personal sanctuaries.
