Calizonia Casual by JMAD Reimagines Ancient Roman Design for Modern Desert Living
Set against the dramatic desert backdrop of Paradise Valley, Arizona, Calizonia Casual is a bold reinterpretation of ancient Roman principles through the lens of contemporary California-Arizona design. This award-winning home fuses history, innovation, and landscape into a unified architectural experience centered around its most sacred modern element — the pool.
“We envisioned a home that feels like a modern oasis, yet rooted in ancient logic,” explains the lead architect. “The Romans built their homes around water; we’ve done the same here — only with a panoramic twist.”
Designed for full 360-degree views, every room in Calizonia Casual is intentionally positioned to frame the surrounding landscape — from Camelback Mountain to the glittering desert horizon. A central pool acts as the heart of the home, flanked by open living spaces, tranquil suites, and shaded outdoor lounges.

A Courtyard for the 21st Century
The floor plan of Calizonia Casual may appear simple on paper, but it’s in three-dimensional space where the home truly reveals its genius. Rather than relying on traditional segmentation, JMAD created a continuous spatial flow, where every room opens into the next through carefully planned transitions and framed vistas.
“We design beyond the floor plan — we sculpt in three dimensions,” says the project architect. “This is not about walls and doors; it’s about how light, space, and movement create atmosphere.”
The pool, inspired by Roman atriums, becomes a reflecting and gathering point. Surrounded by breezy indoor-outdoor zones, it functions not only as a visual centerpiece but also as a cooling and energizing force in the layout.

Where Arizona Modern Meets California Casual
The architectural language of the home is unmistakably modern, with clean lines, oversized glazing, cantilevered roofs, and desert-toned materials. Yet the energy evokes a distinctly Californian spirit — relaxed, luminous, and airy.
“We call it ‘Calizonia’ because it truly marries the lifestyle of both states,” adds the design director. “Arizona brings the raw beauty; California brings the ease. The result is a home that feels effortless and elevated.”
Deep roof overhangs provide shade during intense Arizona summers while enhancing the horizontal lines of the home. Natural materials such as stucco, steel, and wood create warmth and textural depth, while the minimalist palette keeps the focus on the views.

Award-Winning Design with Purpose
Calizonia Casual was recognized with a Second Place Award for Vacation Home Outside of Minnesota in the Midwest Home Design Awards, a testament to its timeless appeal and thoughtful innovation.
“This home doesn’t just look good — it lives well,” says the architectural team. “From the moment you step inside, it invites you to move, rest, and take in the desert’s ever-changing light.”
