Perched high above Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles, Casale House by McClean Design is a contemporary residence designed to fully embrace its remarkable setting. With uninterrupted views toward the Pacific Ocean and the lush natural landscape below, the home is conceived as a light-filled retreat that celebrates Southern California’s ideal climate and its culture of year-round indoor–outdoor living.

A Dramatic Hillside Arrival

The approach to the house unfolds gradually along a meandering driveway that ascends the sloping peninsula site. As visitors reach the drive court, the expansive ocean view is revealed for the first time—an intentional moment designed to heighten the experience of arrival.

“We wanted the arrival to feel like a discovery,” the architects explain. “The winding approach builds anticipation before the landscape and the house fully reveal themselves.”

This careful choreography establishes a strong connection between the architecture and its hillside environment.

A Courtyard That Brings Light to Every Level

Organized across three levels, the residence is structured around a central water courtyard that introduces natural light deep into the lower portions of the home. This open-to-sky feature acts as both a visual centerpiece and a functional device, illuminating the basement entertainment spaces below.

“The courtyard allows the lower level to feel connected to the outdoors,” the design team note. “Light, reflections, and the presence of water create a calm atmosphere even in the deeper parts of the house.”

The courtyard also strengthens spatial continuity between the different levels of the residence.

A Ground Floor Designed for Living and Views

Inside, a broad entry hallway divides the main living program into distinct yet interconnected zones. To the south, the living room and dining areas open toward the garden, welcoming natural light and framing views of the surrounding greenery.

To the north, the light-filled courtyard and sculptural stairwell provide visual balance and a connection to the home’s vertical circulation.

The Western wing of the house contains a spacious family room and kitchen that open directly to the outdoor pool terrace. From here, residents enjoy uninterrupted views across protected natural landscapes that extend toward the ocean.

“The social spaces were designed to flow naturally into the outdoor environment,” the architects explain. “The pool terrace becomes an extension of the interior living areas.”

Private Retreats Above and Leisure Spaces Below

The upper level is dedicated primarily to private living. The primary bedroom suite occupies a privileged position, complete with separate his-and-her closets and bathrooms. Additional bedrooms and a small family lounge complete this level, creating comfortable private quarters for family members and guests.

Below, the basement level offers a range of leisure and entertainment amenities, including a media room, gym, additional family spaces, and an extensive wine cellar.

This layered program allows the house to balance privacy, social interaction, and relaxation across different levels.

Clean Geometry and Warm Natural Materials

The architectural language of the residence is defined by crisp modern lines that contrast with the organic landscape of the hillside site. Large openings and carefully positioned volumes ensure that views are captured in multiple directions.

Despite its contemporary clarity, the material palette introduces warmth and texture. Limestone surfaces, oak finishes, and subtle metal accents create an inviting atmosphere throughout the interiors.

“We aimed for a palette that feels natural and timeless,” the architects share. “The materials soften the architecture while maintaining a sense of refinement.”
