Architecture Design of Cheng Brier House

Description About The Project

Cheng Brier House, skillfully designed by Swatt Miers Architects, is ingeniously arranged across three levels that gracefully descend the steep hillside. The entrance and all the “public” spaces, include the kitchen, dining area, living room, and family spaces, situated on the middle level. Once accessible from the Eastern and Western ends of the property, dual landscape stairways lead to this level. The interior composition boasts a double height living space, which adds a touch of grandeur and fosters vertical connectivity throughout.

On the upper level, the family bedrooms are thoughtfully positioned, with the master suite offer a unique private outdoor Japanese “onsen” open air bathing area. It provides a stunning vista overlook the captivating San Francisco Bay. Meanwhile, the lower level of the house accommodates a children’s play area, create a dedicated space for their enjoyment.

On the other hand, the landscape design showcases several noteworthy features, include a pool with cantilevered decks located at the middle level. This pool ingeniously connected to an entrance water feature through an interior and exterior narrow water runnel, which elegantly slices through the home. Also, forging a visual and spatial connection between the two elements. Beneath the house, a series of pathways and terraces framed by rocks guide the way to a picturesque pond situated at the bottom of the site.

In order to ensure privacy and create a sense of seclusion from the uphill neighbors, the North facing side of the house boasts a distinctive design element. A rhythmic pattern of closely spaced teak vertical mullions establishes a visually captivating screen. In stark contrast, the South side of the house enveloped in floor to ceiling glass. Also, strategically capture and maximize the extraordinary panoramic views offered by the renowned San Francisco Bay Area.

The Cheng Brier House Gallery:

Text by the Architects: This 6,000 square foot home – Cheng Brier house terraces down a steep sloped lot in Tiburon with dramatic views of the bay. Also, the material palette is an elegant combination of bright white stucco, teak and gray limestone. With the street facing facade featuring a dramatic teak screen. The living spaces open up to the views, and the large decks and cantilevered terraces allow for ample outdoor living. Water is a prominent feature of this home. It begins with a waterfall at the entry that becomes a narrow water feature running directly through the public living areas and out to the pool facing the bay.
