A Future-Oriented Home in a Green Dutch Neighborhood
Set within a spacious and leafy residential area in the Netherlands, this Contemporary Villa by BNLA architecten replaces outdated housing with a home designed for the present and the future. The project reflects a clear ambition: to create a refined living environment that prioritizes comfort, calmness, and sustainability, without excess or visual noise.
Rather than seeking architectural spectacle, the villa focuses on balance—between openness and privacy, solidity and transparency, and architecture and everyday life.

Horizontal Volumes Shaped by Material Contrast
The villa is composed of horizontally oriented volumes, carefully articulated through a varied yet cohesive material palette. Brickwork, weathered wooden slats, crisp white stucco, and expansive glazing are layered to give the home both warmth and precision.
Toward the street, the architecture is intentionally introverted. A composed façade provides privacy and tranquility, aligning naturally with the scale and rhythm of the surrounding neighborhood. Steel canopies accentuate the villa’s horizontal lines while adding a subtle sense of luxury.
“The street façade is deliberately calm,” note the architects. “It offers privacy while allowing the house to sit comfortably within its residential context.”

Opening Fully to the Garden
In contrast, the garden façade unfolds with openness and generosity. Large windows and extended sightlines dissolve the boundary between inside and out, allowing greenery to become an integral part of the living experience.
The careful placement of glazing ensures abundant daylight throughout the home while maintaining a strong sense of shelter and intimacy.
“The garden side of the villa is where openness takes precedence,” BNLA architecten add. “Here, the house engages directly with nature.”

Interior Spaces Defined by Light and Flow
Inside, the villa reveals itself as a bright, fluid living environment, designed around the daily rhythm of its inhabitants. The kitchen and living areas flow seamlessly into one another, unified by natural light and visual connections to the garden.
A sunken seating area with a fireplace introduces intimacy within the open plan, creating a place for gathering without disrupting spatial continuity. Throughout the home, daylight plays a central role, shifting gently across surfaces and reinforcing the sense of calm.
“Light was treated as a primary design material,” the architects explain. “It defines atmosphere as much as form.”
A Basement That Expands Living Possibilities
Below ground, a generous basement level adds a flexible layer to the villa’s program. Designed as an integral extension of the home rather than a secondary space, it accommodates functions such as a gym, home cinema, and storage, enhancing livability without increasing the building’s footprint above ground.
This approach allows the villa to remain modest in scale while offering substantial functionality.
“The basement adds versatility while keeping the architecture above ground restrained and elegant,” says BNLA architecten.

Sustainable Living Without Compromise
The villa is fully gas-free and equipped with a ground-source heat pump and advanced smart home technology, ensuring a high level of comfort alongside strong energy performance. Sustainability is not treated as an add-on, but as a quiet, integrated part of the design.
