Embracing Openness and Nature
Nestled in Brentwood, Los Angeles, the Getty View House by IR Architects epitomizes modern luxury, thoughtfully designed to maximize panoramic vistas of the Los Angeles skyline, Santa Monica Bay, and the iconic Getty Center. The home’s orientation and extensive use of glazing, including a 65-foot-wide retractable glass wall, blur the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces.
“Our goal was to create a sanctuary that feels both expansive and intimate, where each space invites the outside in,” says the lead architect at IR Architects. “By integrating natural elements like the central olive tree and water features, we’ve fostered a continuous dialogue between the built environment and nature.”
Architectural Harmony and Materiality
The residence showcases a modern, cubic façade complemented by unfinished travertine accents, echoing the materiality of the nearby Getty Center. Inside, light wood floors, large-scale artworks, and bespoke lighting fixtures contribute to a serene yet sophisticated ambiance.

“Material selection was pivotal,” notes the design team. “We chose finishes that not only resonate with the surrounding landscape but also age gracefully over time.”

Thoughtful Spatial Planning
Upon entering through a pivoting glass door, visitors are greeted by a double-height great room that offers sweeping views and abundant natural light. A central, glass-encased staircase serves as the home’s spine, connecting public and private areas while enhancing the sense of openness.

Behind the chef’s kitchen is the butler’s kitchen and pantry, laundry room, and home gym. This well-appointed workout room has wood-lined walls and abundant hillside daylight from large windows. Mirrors line one wall, which includes a flat-screen TV. The opposing wall showcases attractive slatted wood paneling. The gym opens to a quiet, small courtyard area, further enhancing the indoor-outdoor living experience. With its proximity to the butler’s kitchen, the gym was designed to alternately function as staff quarters if desired.

Off of the lounge area and the open dining room is a sunken media room designed for focused viewing. This space features comfortable white upholstered sofas and chairs, creating an ideal environment for relaxation and entertainment. A temperature-controlled wine showcase room shares one wall of the media room.

“Circulation within the home was designed to be intuitive,” explains the architect. “Each transition between spaces is deliberate, ensuring a harmonious flow that caters to both daily living and entertaining.”

Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Living
The home’s design emphasizes a seamless connection to the outdoors. The expansive glass wall in the great room opens to an infinity pool and patio, creating an ideal setting for Southern California’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle. Additional outdoor spaces, including rooftop patios and landscaped courtyards, offer tranquil retreats and entertainment areas.
The bar includes white and gray marble countertops with an antiqued mirror backsplash. Above it is a suite of built-in bookshelves. On either side of the bar and bookshelves are slatted warm wood walls, each adorned with a small abstract framed work of art beneath wall-mounted art lamps. Gray upholstered barstools with brass details complement the space, while four metallic, saddle-shaped lamps hang above each spot at the bar.

“Outdoor spaces are extensions of the interior,” the design team emphasizes. “They provide versatility and enhance the overall living experience.”
