Hidden in Plain Sight: JMAD’s Hillside Modern Blends Into Nature
In a striking interplay between architecture and topography, Hillside Modern by redefines the concept of a rural retreat. Built directly into a hillside, the home conceals its grandeur from the street, revealing itself only from the rear as a sculptural, multi-story composition opening toward a serene wetland landscape.
“We wanted the house to emerge from the earth, not sit on top of it,” shares the lead architect. “From the front, it almost disappears — it’s a quiet gesture. But step around back, and the structure unfolds in levels and light.”
This thoughtful approach results in a unique architectural rhythm — modest and private on arrival, expansive and expressive at its core.
Elevated Living with Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Design
The heart of Hillside Modern lies in its connection to nature. The pool is elevated to the main floor level, allowing for a seamless extension of the kitchen and great room into the outdoors. This adjacency transforms everyday living into a fluid, resort-like experience.
“By placing the pool at main floor height, we blurred the boundaries between interior and exterior,” explains the JMAD project designer. “It’s perfect for entertaining — open the doors and you’re instantly in your backyard retreat.”
An outdoor waterfall was carefully integrated into the landscape not just for visual impact, but also for acoustic ambience. The soft trickle of water offers a calming counterpoint to the expansive rural setting.

A Home with Layers and Light
The multi-level layout invites exploration. From private quarters tucked discreetly into the hillside to airy balconies overlooking natural wetlands, each level of the home reveals a new perspective. Natural light pours through carefully placed windows and sliding doors, casting dynamic shadows throughout the day.
“We designed the home to be experienced differently depending on the level you’re on,” notes the senior architect. “Whether you’re upstairs reading or downstairs entertaining, you feel the architecture working with the land.”
Inside, clean lines, natural textures, and subtle wood accents keep the interiors grounded and timeless. A focus on open-plan living ensures flexibility, while strategic overhangs and brise-soleil protect from harsh sunlight without sacrificing views.
