Architecture Design of House Symbiosis

Description About The Project

House Symbiosis in Athens by Direction Architects reimagines dual-family living with sculptural design, green features, and balanced spatial privacy. House Symbiosis in Athens, Greece, designed by Direction Architects, exemplifies a new paradigm of shared family living. Conceived for two sibling families, the residence redefines the boundaries of togetherness and solitude, achieving a sophisticated balance between intimacy and connection.

The Project “House Symbiosis” Information:

A New Typology for Dual Living

Responding to the evolving needs of multigenerational families, the architects approached the brief with the goal of establishing a spatial symbiosis: a house that fosters familial closeness while preserving privacy. “In today’s fast-paced world, time with loved ones is invaluable,” the lead architect told Luxury Houses Magazine. “Our aim was to create a living model where two families can thrive together while retaining their individual identities.”

The project is situated on a corner plot in Athens, its plan shaped into an L-formation to optimize open space and daylight. Unlike traditional duplexes, House Symbiosis employs an interconnected massing that visually and functionally integrates both homes.

Spatial Composition and Circulation

Volumetric experimentation was key to mediating public and private zones. The design employs a sculptural tectonic approach, with curvilinear masses evoking a sense of fluidity and directional movement. This sense of motion isn’t just visual: internal circulation is choreographed vertically and horizontally, guiding inhabitants naturally between spaces.

The lower residence spans the ground floor and southeast of the first floor, with direct access to a lush private garden and a swimming pool. The upper residence occupies the northwest of the first floor and the entire second floor, crowned by a green roof terrace with panoramic views.

Shared facilities, including parking and storage, are smartly positioned on the basement level. Each living unit has its own entrance and outdoor zones, ensuring autonomy without disconnection.

Sculptural Form and Privacy

Facade modulation was critical to the architectural expression. By manipulating the façade’s volumetric displacement, balconies and cantilevered elements were introduced to reduce direct sightlines between the two homes. One of the most arresting features is the ribbon-like geometry that wraps the inner facade, contributing a kinetic visual identity to the house.

“The interplay of light and shadow across the sculpted facade enhances both the building’s privacy and its poetic resonance,” the design team noted.

Embracing Sustainability

Aligned with principles of sustainable design, the house is oriented to maximize solar gain while minimizing overheating. A green roof and landscaped garden cover 75% of the site, aiding in thermal regulation. The project also utilizes renewable energy, with geothermal systems for heating and cooling, and photovoltaics contributing to electrical demands.

Cultural and Contemporary Resonance
