Oaks Residence: Living Within a Canopy of Trees
Set within the lush residential landscape of Pinecrest, Oaks Residence by SDH Studio Architecture + Design is conceived as a home that grows from its environment rather than displacing it. Surrounded by mature oak trees, the architecture responds with sensitivity—framing, preserving, and celebrating the natural character of the site.

Architecture Designed Around Trees
From the outset, the design strategy focused on embracing the existing oaks as defining elements of the project. The floor plan is carefully arranged to capture views of their expansive canopies and textured trunks, allowing nature to shape the spatial experience.

“The trees were not obstacles—they were the starting point,” the architects explain. “We designed the house to frame them, to live with them, and to celebrate their presence.”

As a result, the home unfolds as a sequence of framed perspectives, where each space reveals a new relationship with the surrounding landscape.

A Journey of Intimate and Grand Views
Moving through the residence becomes a curated experience of discovery. Spaces shift between intimate moments and expansive views, creating a rhythm that feels both personal and immersive.

Corridors, living areas, and transitional spaces are aligned to reveal glimpses of the trees at different scales—from close-up textures to sweeping canopy views.

“We wanted the experience of the house to feel almost cinematic,” the design team share. “Each step reveals a different layer of the landscape.”
This choreography of views transforms everyday movement into an architectural journey.

Floating Volumes and Environmental Sensitivity
One of the defining gestures of the project is the decision to elevate portions of the structure above the ground. These floating volumes allow the extensive root systems of the mature oaks to remain undisturbed, ensuring the long-term health of the landscape.

“The house lifts lightly above to respect the natural systems below,” the architects note. “It’s about coexistence rather than control.”

This approach not only preserves the trees but also enhances the visual lightness of the architecture, giving the home a sense of suspension within the landscape.
A Dialogue Between Structure and Nature
The interplay between built form and natural environment defines the character of Oaks Residence. Clean contemporary lines contrast with the organic complexity of the trees, while large openings blur the boundary between interior and exterior.

Light filters through branches, casting shifting shadows across the interiors and reinforcing the presence of nature throughout the day.
“The architecture acts as a frame,” the team explain. “Nature becomes the primary visual experience.”

Through its elevated volumes, carefully framed views, and deep respect for the existing landscape, Oaks Residence reflects the design philosophy of SDH Studio Architecture + Design—creating homes that are not only contemporary in form, but also deeply rooted in their environment.

The result is a tranquil residence where architecture and nature exist in quiet harmony, allowing life to unfold beneath a living canopy of trees.
