Description About The Project

Folsom House designed by by McClean Design, nestled on a stunning site overlooking Lake Folsom in Northern California, clients, inspired by cherished memories of Coastal Orange County, embarked on a journey to create a residence that seamlessly blends with the coastal aesthetic. Discovered online, the site not only offered breathtaking lake views to the east but also the captivating landscapes of the Sacramento Valley and coastal mountain ranges to the west.

The project, marked by the acquisition of an adjacent lot, opened up numerous possibilities for a thoughtful and expansive design. The goal was to maximize lake views while preserving existing oak trees, strategically considering the orientation of spaces throughout the day, and minimizing the visual impact of cars and the private road to the west.

Divided into three sections, the house features private spaces to the north, public areas in the middle, and family and guest rooms to the South. An enchanting entrance through a canopied gate and past oak trees leads to a water feature, culminating at a front door with unobstructed lake views. Privacy is maintained through clever grading and a stone garden wall.

The main bedroom captures early morning views of the Sierras and local wildlife, while the guest wing’s family room connects to an outdoor terrace with a roof deck overlooking the valley lights at night. To the northwest, an artist studio with a kiln caters to the clients’ artistic pursuits, showcasing their talents as accomplished artists and photographers.

The design palette, reminiscent of the beach, features light materials such as soft cream limestone, accented with white and silver metals. Cantilevered roofs undulate gracefully across the landscape, creating a harmonious fusion of coastal inspiration and Northern California’s natural beauty.

Text by the Architects: The clients acquired a beautiful site overlooking Lake Folsom in Northern California. Our Clients had happy memories of times spent in Coastal Orange County and imagined hiring someone who would bring a quality to the project of the coast. Finding us online we were very excited to head up and see this beautiful site. The project took a while to get going as the Clients managed to acquire an adjacent lot that would give us many more options in developing a design.
