Architecture Design of Laurel III House

Description About The Project

Laurel III House by McClean Design nestled on a quiet street in Beverly Hills, is a modern family home that maximizes its challenging triangular site with stunning views of the city below. The narrow site posed unique design constraints, including local codes requiring the upper level to be perpendicular to the view. However, these challenges were transformed into architectural opportunities, resulting in a striking residence that harmonizes with its surroundings while offering a luxurious, open living experience.

At the narrow end of the site, the entrance begins with a ceremonial drive court that leads through the house, visually connecting the street to the cityscape beyond. A dramatic glass bridge spans a central light-well, providing access to the main entry and creating a sense of transparency as it floats above a descending water feature. Flanked by green marble, two cascading water walls frame the approach, with one flowing into a water feature in the basement, adding a touch of elegance to the entry sequence.

Inside, the design opens into a formal living area that showcases the breathtaking view through expansive glass walls, extending out to an infinity-edge pool on the terrace. Adjacent to the living space, the kitchen and family room share the same panoramic views, while a service kitchen remains tucked away for convenience. The main level also features an office and powder room for additional functionality.

A vertical glazed staircase, alongside an elevator, connects the three levels of the home. The upper level is reserved for the primary bedroom and a guest suite, with the most remarkable feature being the cantilevered master bedroom. This floating structure hovers above the pool terrace, offering uninterrupted views of the city while providing ample shade for outdoor living. The absence of columns creates an open, flowing space in the rear yard, enhancing both the visual impact and functionality.

The basement level accommodates family bedrooms and a family room that surround the light court, ensuring natural light penetrates the subterranean space. This level also houses a gym, wellness area, media room, and garage, making it a fully equipped lower level for both leisure and daily living. The infinity pool, located in the rear yard, not only offers a reflective surface for the city lights but also serves as a visual barrier between the home and the neighboring property.

Text by the Architects: A unique but challenging site on a quiet street in Beverly Hills, the client wanted to create a family home that he could enjoy as a family residence. The site has a terrific view of the city below but is narrow and triangular in shape and local codes required that the upper level be perpendicular to the view.
