A Dutch Forest Retreat Inspired by the Spirit of Los Angeles
Set in the serene woodlands of Waalre, the Luxury Bosvilla by STATE of Architecture brings the spirit of Los Angeles minimalism to the Netherlands. With its clean lines, generous glazing, and calm materiality, the home echoes the compositional purity of contemporary Californian villas—yet feels deeply connected to its northern European context.
“We imagined a home that breathes—one where space, light, and nature are in continuous dialogue,” explains lead architect Pieter Kromwijk in an interview with Luxury Houses Magazine. “The stillness of the forest shaped everything from proportion to material.”
Anchored by horizontal volumes and softened by expansive overhangs, the villa achieves a spatial rhythm that is both powerful and discreet.

Openness Without Exposure
The layout is organized around flow and continuity. Inside, each space transitions seamlessly—from kitchen to dining to living—without ever breaking the visual connection to the landscape beyond. Full-height sliding glass panels open the interiors to the forest, drawing in natural light filtered by leaves and seasons.
“Transparency was crucial,” says co-architect Sophie van Riel. “But we didn’t want a glass box. We wanted movement, rhythm, protection.” Vertical timber slats wrap portions of the façade, acting as a screen that balances openness with privacy. Their spacing and repetition create a gentle architectural cadence across the villa’s length.
A Palette of Restraint and Expression
Materiality in the Bosvilla is a study in restraint, where each element has been selected to evoke calm and cohesion. Crisp white and deep black stucco define the structure with bold contrast. Softly textured concrete floor tiles ground the interiors in earthy permanence, while warm wooden panels offer a sense of tactility and shelter.
“We kept the palette deliberately minimal,” notes Kromwijk. “But richness comes from how materials meet—how light hits concrete, how timber lines a hallway, how a shadow travels across a surface.”
This approach turns simplicity into sensory depth. Even the most neutral elements gain emotional resonance through craftsmanship and context.
Rooted in Stillness, Designed for Life
Beyond its elegant form, the Bosvilla is deeply functional. Its generous overhangs provide natural shading during summer while allowing winter light to warm the interiors. The structure is fitted with high-efficiency insulation, smart climate systems, and solar energy solutions—quietly reinforcing its sustainable backbone.
The house is not merely a retreat, but a living framework for daily life. “We weren’t just designing a home,” says van Riel. “We were designing peace, flow, and an architecture that encourages stillness.”
Inside, acoustics are softened, light is diffused, and every detail—from door handles to furniture placement—is calibrated for subtle luxury.
Conclusion: A Contemporary Forest Haven
The Luxury Bosvilla in Waalre stands as a refined translation of West Coast modernism within a European woodland context. It is a house shaped by silence, light, and deliberate form—a sanctuary where architecture becomes atmosphere.
“In the end, the house is about restraint,” concludes Kromwijk. “It’s about finding beauty in simplicity and letting nature finish the story.”
