A Corner-Lot Masterpiece Elevated Above the Iconic Bird Streets
Marcheeta II House by McClean Design rises confidently above a prominent corner lot in the legendary Bird Streets of the Hollywood Hills — a neighborhood synonymous with bold contemporary architecture. Perched high above street level, the residence leverages its elevated position to frame sweeping panoramic views of the Los Angeles basin and surrounding ridgelines.
From the outset, the design revolves around the idea of lifting the main living level to maximize sightlines while simultaneously illuminating the basement with carefully orchestrated skylight courts. As Paul McClean notes, “Elevation became the project’s primary gesture — a way to connect every major space to the extraordinary landscape.”
A Layered Entry Sequence That Balances Privacy and Drama
The entry is subtly veiled from the street by a minimalist metal screen, creating a sense of discretion while complementing the expressive stonework that anchors the façade. Guests cross a bridge into an intimate courtyard — a threshold that provides privacy, channels daylight downward, and immediately sets the tone for the home’s sculptural precision.
A skylit, sculptural staircase forms the vertical heart of the home. Positioned adjacent to the entry, it drops light deep into the lower level and visually links the two floors. McClean explains, “We wanted the stair to act as a void of light — a spine connecting sky and ground, public and private.”

Light, Landscape, and Lifestyle on the Elevated Main Level
Inside the upper floor, the living spaces orbit around a central garden and pool, arranged to capture the most dramatic views stretching across the city. The primary suite sits quietly at the rear of the property along a clean, axial path, ensuring tranquility and uninterrupted vistas.
Toward the front, the kitchen and family areas soak in southern daylight while opening to the panoramic horizon. Two additional bedrooms complete the composition, creating a floor plan that is open yet highly intentional.
According to the design team, “The plan is simple, but its clarity is what allows the views, the pool, and the garden to become the true protagonists.”

A Basement Designed as a Light-Filled Entertainment Hub
Far from conventional, the basement unfolds as a vibrant, social environment anchored by a generous den and linear bar. Two expansive water-filled light wells introduce daylight, reflection, and movement, transforming the lower level into a dynamic, luminous extension of the main floor.
Three bedrooms enjoy natural light and garden views thanks to the courtyard strategy. A dedicated gym with its own plunge pool and light well, a wellness suite, and a media room complete the level — all designed with equal attention to livability and luxury.
The basement-level garage, expansive in scale, exits at street level and forms the structural plinth supporting the elevated kitchen and family room above.

A Refined Modernist Language with Warm, Livable Interiors
Marcheeta II House adheres to a disciplined modernist vocabulary: crisp white volumes, blackened metal details, and bold, veined black stone accents. This architectural clarity is softened by an interior palette of warm wood ceilings and honed limestone floors, creating a balance between sculptural precision and everyday comfort.
McClean describes the approach succinctly: “Modern architecture must be both exacting and human. This home is about precision softened by warmth.”
