The Project “MG House” Information:

A Statement of Contemporary Living

MG House reimagines the modern South African residence as a striking interplay of geometry, texture, and landscape. The design is unapologetically bold yet grounded in warmth and tactility, offering a refined family retreat that balances sculptural form with livable functionality.

As the architects explained to Luxury Houses Magazine: “Our ambition with MG House was to create a sculptural composition that feels both anchored to its environment and expressive of the family’s dynamic lifestyle.”

Geometry and Materiality

The architecture unfolds as a series of interlocking volumes, where crisp concrete planes, natural stone walls, and expanses of glass meet in a harmonious dialogue. Each material was carefully chosen to emphasize contrast while remaining connected to the surrounding landscape.

The stonework, sourced locally, roots the house in its context, while broad concrete overhangs provide both shading and visual weight. Glass walls dissolve boundaries, opening the home to views of the garden and pool.

Metropole Architects noted: “We sought to achieve a dynamic tension between solidity and lightness. The house reads as monumental, but the transparency of glass and the warmth of timber soften its presence.”

Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Integration

In keeping with the South African tradition of outdoor living, the house blurs the thresholds between inside and outside. Sliding glass doors open onto expansive terraces, where a shimmering pool and landscaped gardens create a setting for leisure and connection.

The layout encourages fluidity, with open-plan living areas flowing into shaded outdoor lounges and dining spaces. The result is a residence that is at once sophisticated and deeply attuned to its environment.

As the design team shared with Luxury Houses: “We designed MG House to function like a pavilion—open, airy, and connected to nature, while still offering the family comfort and privacy.”

Light, Space, and Atmosphere

Natural light plays a starring role throughout the house. Double-height spaces and clerestory windows allow sunlight to filter in, animating the interiors with shifting patterns of shadow and illumination.

The interiors echo the architectural palette—timber ceilings, stone walls, and polished concrete floors create a tactile experience that feels both contemporary and timeless. The neutral color scheme, accented by natural textures, enhances the sense of calm and refinement.

Metropole Architects remarked: “We wanted every space to have a relationship with the outdoors, whether through framed views, direct garden access, or the play of light across raw materials.”
