Tropical Soul Meets Environmental Modernism
With its signature philosophy of environmental modernism, Strang Architecture has crafted a tropical residence that feels at once rooted in its South Florida context and deeply connected to the cultural identity of its Brazilian owners. Designed for a family of four, this warm, expressive home celebrates natural materials, Brazilian sensibility, and sustainable living—all under one refined roof.
“This project wasn’t just about building a house—it was about telling a story,” said Max Strang, founding principal of Strang Architecture, in an interview with Luxury Houses Magazine. “We wanted the design to reflect their Brazilian heritage while embracing our core ethos of sustainability and climate-conscious architecture.”

A Home Built for Connection
Despite the home’s generous footprint, one of the key challenges was fostering a sense of intimacy and connectivity. To meet this, Strang Architecture composed a series of volumes that create both communal gathering areas and quiet, private retreats. The heart of the home—an expansive great room—flows into a shaded courtyard, blurring interior and exterior with retractable glass walls and deep overhangs.
“We organized the program around comfort and connection,” the project architect explained. “The living areas invite people together, while the layout still allows for private moments.”
Vintage Brazilian furnishings and handmade pieces sourced by the family were thoughtfully integrated into the interiors, creating a home rich in memory and meaning. These elements soften the home’s strong architectural lines and bring a soulful texture to every space.

Natural Materials with Intentional Craft
Material selection was key to reflecting the client’s heritage while meeting Strang’s rigorous environmental standards. The team chose unfilled travertine for both interior and exterior flooring—providing a tactile continuity throughout the house. Rough-cut Jerusalem stone and exposed board-form concrete anchor the exterior, while teak millwork and slatted wood ceilings introduce organic warmth inside.
“We wanted the house to feel tactile and timeless,” noted the interior designer. “Teak and travertine offer a material honesty that connects the home to the landscape—ad to Brazilian traditions.”
The exterior walls feel monolithic yet textured, catching light and shadow throughout the day. Interior finishes, including curated pieces from Opustone and lighting by Apparatus, lend subtle luxury without overpowering the natural palette.

Landscape as an Extension of Architecture
Strang Architecture collaborated with La Casona Garden, a landscape architecture studio, to create an exterior experience that mirrors the home’s environmental goals. Together, they sourced native species to establish a thriving ecosystem and designated a portion of the property as a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.
“The landscape was treated as an extension of the architecture,” said Max Strang. “It breathes with the house, softens it, and brings in movement and life.”
Verdant plantings create shade and privacy, while stone and wood pathways guide residents toward garden courtyards and a serene outdoor pool lounge. Every zone of the home has a visual or physical link to the outdoors, reinforcing its connection to place.
Technology with Purpose, Not Noise
While the home is deeply tactile and grounded, it also integrates a refined selection of modern conveniences. From Mia Cucina’s custom kitchen solutions to Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, each element was chosen with performance and discretion in mind. Smart AV systems by AVX deliver seamless entertainment and comfort.
“Technology was carefully embedded, never dominant,” explained the systems consultant. “It supports the family’s lifestyle without interfering with the architecture’s integrity.”
