Floating Geometry and Sculpted Light Define Panjab House in Ludhiana
Designed by Planet Design & Associates, the Panjab House redefines the typology of the suburban Indian residence. Located on a 6,800 sq ft plot in Ludhiana, the 6,000 sq ft residence achieves a striking architectural identity through a first-floor volume that appears to float above the base structure. The home’s elevation is bold yet understated, characterized by travertine stone, corten steel inserts, vertical metal frames, and warm wood screens.
“Our goal was to create a seamless integration of light, material, and form, where every part of the house speaks the same architectural language,” shares the design team. “The first-floor mass had to feel effortless—floating yet grounded through carefully calculated proportions.”

Planning Through Vertical and Horizontal Connectivity
Spatial organization is the crux of the project, and much of the design effort was concentrated on creating visual and functional connections across levels. A double-height dining atrium, located at the heart of the house, acts as a pivot around which the living spaces are arranged. This core not only enhances spatial fluidity but ensures natural light and ventilation penetrate deep into the home.
“Good design is invisible—it flows,” explains the principal architect. “We wanted users to feel that no matter where they are, they’re always connected to another space—visually, physically, and experientially.”
On the ground floor, an open-plan layout connects the drawing room, living area, kitchen, and dining space. Only the guest bedroom remains enclosed. Light filters through the architectural screen, casting sciographic patterns throughout the interiors and creating a poetic rhythm to the day.

Spatial Hierarchy and Material Narrative
The home’s upper floor houses two spacious bedrooms and an entertainment lounge—planned to function as a flexible future bedroom if needed. The master suite is a showpiece in itself, featuring a 15′ x 29′ bedroom paired with an equally expansive dressing and bath area. The children’s bedroom is both functional and whimsical, designed with soft pastels, floral tile patterns, and thoughtful storage.
“We focused on designing each room to reflect the individuality of its occupant,” says the team. “At the same time, we ensured that the larger architectural narrative stayed cohesive—from façade to furnishings.”
The interior material palette is a rich interplay of metal and wood, with glass partitions, dark marble flooring, and light upholstery offering a careful balance between luxury and warmth. The master bath, for instance, becomes an art piece with graphic tiles and glass wardrobes that float between mirrored vanities.
Light, Landscape, and Livability
With landscaped gardens to the north and a green margin courtyard to the southwest, every room in the house is gifted with natural light and outdoor views. Each bedroom includes a private balcony—ranging from Juliet-style railings to more immersive garden-facing spaces.
“We believe in designing homes that breathe,” says one of the architects. “Natural light and airflow are not luxuries; they are fundamentals of healthy architecture.”
A carefully articulated entrance sequence welcomes guests through a travertine-flanked vestibule, complete with a small water body and dynamic shadows from the metal screen—a microcosm of what lies inside.
A House That Lives and Breathes
The Panjab House is not merely an aesthetic composition—it’s a living, evolving architectural organism that adapts to its users and engages with its environment. With emphasis on planning, light, and continuity of materials, the home exemplifies how thoughtful architecture can elevate everyday living.
“The design is timeless because it’s rooted in logic and purpose,” concludes the lead architect. “We see this house not as an object, but as an experience—one that changes with the day, with seasons, and with the people who live in it.”
