Architecture Design of Smyth 139 House
Description About The Project
Smyth 139 House, designed by R79 – Roberto Ramírez Pizarro, stands as a testament to innovative design, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. Located on a 1,600 m² rectangular plot within the tranquil residential complex of La Ceiba, near Mérida, this two-story home embraces its connection to the natural surroundings, particularly the adjacent golf course. The design employs “cross-section architecture,” a unique approach that elevates the house to half a level above ground, offering captivating views of treetops and creating a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The house is situated towards the back of the lot, closer to the golf course, to provide an oasis of privacy and seclusion. A series of alternating bands—services, access, house, and garden—organize the layout, with pre-existing trees integrated into the design. The journey into the house is marked by a series of water ponds and a grand canopy, leading to a striking entrance terrace. The interplay of textures, unconventional materials, and natural elements evoke a sense of retreat, transporting residents into a peaceful countryside ambiance away from urban hustle.
The ground floor features three distinct elements: a stone volume housing the services, a linear wall directing views towards the golf course while concealing semi-public spaces, and a rusted steel block that encloses a terrace and leads to a basement bar and room. The upper floor is defined by a large red box containing the bedrooms, connected by a family room and a balcony framed by lush vegetation.
Material choices were carefully selected to harmonize with the environment. Earthy-toned walls, Chukum plaster mixed with natural pigments, clear stone veneers, and pre-oxidized steel panels create a striking contrast with the vibrant green landscape. Warmth is added through various types of wood, including Parota, Tzalam, and Teak, used in shutters, ceilings, and stairways. The dark marble floors and the green-tiled pool further enhance the sense of continuity between the private garden and the golf course.
