The Project “Tahuna Terrace House” Information:

A Family-Friendly Sanctuary with Expansive Views

Located in the heart of Newport Beach, California, Tahuna Terrace is a new build designed for a busy family with young children. Designed by Brandon Architects and Laura Brophy Interiors, this one-story coastal residence combines luxury with practicality, creating a space that is both elegant and livable. The design focuses on enhancing the “indoor/outdoor” experience, a hallmark of Southern California living.

“Tahuna Terrace was envisioned as a home that maximizes its proximity to the outdoors, offering spaces that not only serve the functional needs of a growing family but also provide a seamless connection to the beautiful coastal environment,” said architect Brandon of Brandon Architects in a conversation with Luxury Houses Magazine. The layout ensures that every room enjoys spectacular views while offering privacy where it’s needed most.

A Seamless Blend of Luxury and Livability

The project sits just above the iconic Newport Harbor, and its design takes full advantage of the panoramic vistas. The rear of the home is wide open with expansive operable glass doors that invite the outdoors inside, ensuring that the residents can enjoy the stunning views of Newport Harbor, the Pacific Ocean, and Catalina Island. As architect Brandon described, “The rear of the house was designed to be as open as possible, allowing the family to live harmoniously with their coastal surroundings.”

The great room, the heart of the home, features a large steel beam, over 40 feet in length, which spans across the space and is exposed on the exterior of the building. This bold architectural element contributes to the home’s unique character while also providing structural support for the expansive open design.

Crafting the Perfect Balance: Privacy and Openness

While the back of the house is completely open to the views, privacy is carefully respected at the front. The home is designed to shield the family from the street, with a strong focus on creating a private, intimate living environment. This contrast between the open back and the more protected front offers the perfect balance of seclusion and openness, a theme that runs throughout the residence.

“Every space in Tahuna Terrace has been thoughtfully designed to create an immersive living experience, ensuring both comfort and privacy for the family while embracing the beauty of the environment,” explained Laura Brophy from Laura Brophy Interiors. The interior design further elevates this sense of comfort with its open floor plan, natural light, and seamless flow between the living spaces.

Architectural Highlights and Material Choices

The home’s architectural features and material palette reflect a modern yet timeless aesthetic. The large cantilevered roof with a sleek metal fascia and metal trellises creates bold visual effects on both sides of the house. These steel elements give the home an industrial feel that is tempered by the soft, organic warmth of the materials used inside.

In the master bedroom, the design continues with the integration of steel elements into the trellis, which provides both function and beauty, while offering shade and privacy. This combination of metal, wood, and glass brings balance to the home’s design, ensuring it complements the natural surroundings while remaining sophisticated and contemporary.

Seamlessly Blending Interiors and Outdoors

As the home was designed to foster the lifestyle of a busy family, every element of the design was carefully considered to ensure maximum usability. The interiors open directly to the outdoors, with the seamless transition from the interior living spaces to the exterior terraces and garden areas. This is especially evident in the great room, where the operable glass doors connect the family directly to the outdoor living areas, promoting a life lived in harmony with nature.

“The goal was to create a design that felt as open and connected to the natural surroundings as possible,” said Brophy. “At the same time, we wanted the space to remain functional and comfortable for the family, ensuring they could enjoy the views and outdoor lifestyle while having enough privacy and space to call their own.”

The local area offers residents access to stunning beaches, water sports, and coastal walks, making Tahuna Terrace the ideal sanctuary for a family that loves to live close to nature yet desires the convenience and comfort of a sophisticated urban lifestyle.
