A Contemporary Greenhouse in the Colombian Mountains
Nestled in the dramatic mountains of La Calera, Colombia, the Teusaca House by SDH Studio Architecture + Design redefines the relationship between domestic life and the natural world. Developed as a contemporary greenhouse, the project immerses its residents in greenery and daylight, with every corridor and living space carefully designed to connect directly to the surrounding environment.
In a statement to Luxury Houses Magazine, the architects explained: “The greenhouse was not a metaphor but the guiding principle of the design. Every wing of the home opens itself to light, air, and vegetation, making nature a daily companion for the residents.”

A Home Organized Around Three Distinct Wings
The design unfolds through three carefully planned wings: the owner’s wing, the guest wing, and the social/entertainment wing. Each part is interconnected through hallways filled with plants, skylights, and natural textures, reinforcing the greenhouse experience.
The generous skylights above bring daylight deep into the interior, while an abundance of vegetation ensures a sense of well-being. This integration transforms the home into a living ecosystem, where architecture and nature operate in harmony.
As SDH Studio described to Luxury Houses: “Our goal was to blur the lines between house and landscape. The wings do not isolate functions but instead weave them together through gardens, light, and greenery.”

Materials That Belong to the Landscape
The material palette of Teusaca House embraces authenticity and sustainability. Local stone grounds the home within the Colombian context, cast-in-place concrete provides strength and permanence, and reclaimed wood adds warmth and tactility. These choices ensure that the house feels at once modern and timeless, contemporary yet deeply rooted in place.
The sloped rooflines echo the surrounding mountain forms, allowing the home to blend seamlessly into the terrain. Together, these elements create a structure that celebrates rather than competes with its environment.
In their reflections for Luxury Houses Magazine, the architects noted: “We wanted the house to emerge from the land as if it had always been there. The materials are not only sustainable but deeply symbolic of place.”

Living with Light, Air, and Greenery
The interior spaces of Teusaca House are designed to enhance health, comfort, and connection. Plants and skylights are not decorative additions but essential parts of the architectural composition. Natural ventilation, abundant daylight, and the integration of greenery ensure a refreshing environment year-round.
The architects concluded in their statement: “This house is more than a shelter; it is a living organism. Its design proves that contemporary architecture can be both luxurious and ecological, both rooted in place and open to the future.”
Conclusion
The Teusaca House by SDH Studio Architecture + Design stands as a serene retreat, harmonizing modern design with Colombia’s mountain landscape. Its greenhouse-inspired form, natural materiality, and thoughtful integration of greenery offer a model for sustainable luxury living. By fusing architecture and environment, it reaffirms the timeless truth that the best homes are those that let nature inside.
