A Modern Architectural Statement in Ahmedabad
Situated in a rapidly developing area of Ahmedabad, The Hover House by VPA Architects is a contemporary private residence designed to maximize openness while ensuring privacy. Nestled between a private bungalow on the East and an open plot on the west, the home strategically opens up towards a Northwest-facing garden, offering an immersive connection to nature.
The client, a family of four, envisioned a spacious yet functional layout, accommodating four bedrooms, shared family spaces, a home theater, and auxiliary structures, including an outdoor kitchen and servant quarters. The total built-up area of 6,700 square feet spans across two floors, with a design philosophy that merges functionality with aesthetic fluidity.

A Dynamic Spatial Organization
Entry and Public Spaces
A dramatic water feature cascading from a floating stone wall marks the grand entrance, adding a serene yet bold statement to the exterior. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a drawing room and a living area, separated by a modular console unit, allowing flexible furniture arrangements based on the family’s needs.
This glass-enclosed space not only fosters an indoor-outdoor connection but also enhances natural ventilation and daylight penetration.
Seamless Flow of Dining and Kitchen Spaces
Further inside, the open kitchen and dining area are designed to harness morning sunlight, creating a welcoming atmosphere for daily meals. A sculptural spiral staircase, clad in solid wood, elegantly ascends from the dining area, serving as both a functional element and an architectural centerpiece.

Aviary: A Unique Architectural Feature
One of the standout elements of The Hover House is the custom-designed aviary, built for the client’s collection of exotic birds. Positioned along the eastern margin of the home, this open-air aviary allows the birds to move freely along the length of the house, reinforcing a deep connection with nature.

Private Quarters and Elevated Living
The ground floor accommodates two bedrooms: a guest bedroom opening into a gravel courtyard and a mother’s suite, extending into a deck that connects to the garden. This layout ensures privacy while maintaining accessibility to the home’s central spaces.
On the first floor, the layout follows a L-shaped configuration:
- The children’s bedroom sits directly above the mother’s bedroom, ensuring a spatial hierarchy.
- The home theater, positioned above the guest suite, provides an exclusive entertainment zone.
- The master suite, complete with a private terrace, enjoys uninterrupted views of the surroundings, creating a sanctuary of comfort and relaxation.

Materiality and Minimalist Aesthetics
The architectural massing of The Hover House embraces clean lines and a restrained material palette:
- Exposed concrete slabs and cantilevered vertical walls define the home’s geometric façade.
- Slab cut-outs and customized screens add a layer of depth and visual intrigue.
- A dominant vertical stone-clad wall, positioned on the western side, acts as the architectural backdrop, reinforcing the home’s distinct identity.

Inside, the interiors balance modernity with warmth:
- Italian-imported furniture accentuates the minimalist aesthetic.
- Locally sourced Kotah stone flooring complements a neutral color palette of greys and earth tones.
- Solid wood paneling and furnishings introduce a tactile contrast, softening the raw concrete finishes.
- Bespoke lighting fixtures, crafted from concrete and wood, are designed exclusively for this residence, ensuring a cohesive design language.
The textiles and upholstery, curated by a renowned textile designer, integrate subtle hues that enhance the home’s tranquil ambiance, completing the vision of a harmonious modern retreat.
