Architecture Design of West Bay House

Description About The Project

West Bay House, designed by McClean Design, is located on the Balboa Peninsula, which runs parallel to the Pacific coast just south of Newport Beach. This area is known for its picturesque views and vibrant boating scene, making it an ideal location for waterfront homes. However, most houses in this area are generic structures squeezed onto narrow lots. A young entrepreneur, seeking a unique family retreat and a space for entertaining friends, commissioned McClean Design to create a standout residence on a triple lot. Collaborating with interior designer Lynda Murray, they aimed to make a bold architectural statement, providing the architects with a chance to fully showcase their creativity.

The square plot allowed for the inclusion of a garden and a large garage at the street frontage. The garden, bathed in sunlight from the south, helps warm the house during winter. Translucent glass shields the garden from the street while allowing glimpses of movement within. The exterior of the three-story house is clad in boldly figured white marble, a material also extensively used inside. Materials were chosen for their durability against salt air corrosion, with luxurious touches like an onyx wall in one of the powder rooms adding elegance. Upon entering through the street gate, visitors are greeted with a view through the transparent façade to the water beyond. A glass bridge spans over a lower-level swimming pool, leading to the great room, which spans almost the entire width of the house. Heaters and a two-sided fireplace make the covered patio and spa usable throughout the year. Pocketing sliders open onto a terrace just above sea level. A stainless steel, spiral staircase with limestone treads connects all three levels, glittering in the light from suspended globes. This vantage point offers a comprehensive view of the house, both horizontally and vertically.

On the upper level, the primary suite and two bedrooms open onto a terrace overlooking the harbor. The 360-degree views from the roof terrace are even more impressive, encompassing mountains to the north, ocean sunsets, and the distant blur of Catalina Island. An outdoor video screen and kitchen make the roof terrace an ideal party venue. The lower level continues the theme of luxury and entertainment with a pool featuring a water wall and padded seating alcove, a sauna, a driving simulator, and a theater that any Hollywood producer would envy. Two guest bedrooms and a gym also open onto the pool area. It’s no surprise that invitations to this house are highly coveted.

The West Bay House Gallery:

Text by the Architects: Balboa Peninsula runs parallel to the Pacific coast, just south of Newport Beach, enclosing a sound that is alive with pleasure boats. That makes it a picturesque location for houses that back up to the marina, but most are generic structures squeezed onto narrow lots. A young entrepreneur commissioned McClean Design to build a house on a triple lot as a family retreat and a place to entertain their many friends. He and his interior designer, Lynda Murray, were eager to make a bold statement, and that gave the architects an opportunity to spread their wings.
