Architecture Design of Bengalis House

Description About The Project

Bengalis House, designed by Façade, located on the coast of Kastelokampos, draws inspiration from the pre-existing structure on the site and the timeless design of traditional bungalows. Rooted in the architectural traditions of Bengal, these bungalows, originating in South Asia, are renowned for their horizontal symmetry, distinctive roof slopes, and large covered terraces. The architects reinterpreted these features to create a modern home that seamlessly blends heritage with contemporary living.

The new structure redefines the essence of the traditional bungalow by translating its core principles into modern architectural language. Comprising three stacked volumes—two floors and an attic—the design emphasizes dynamic interplay between the forms. The ground floor and attic, similar in morphology and materiality, frame the first floor, which acts as a contrasting central volume, introducing visual diversity to the facades.

Large terraces dominate the main facades, providing expansive semi-outdoor spaces that echo the covered verandas of traditional bungalows. Environmentally friendly materials, such as wood, enhance the house’s connection with its natural surroundings. The attic’s bold prism form and steep roof slope pay homage to the bungalow’s iconic rooflines, while the overall composition harmonizes modern functionality with historical context.

Bengalis House stands as a thoughtful reinterpretation of a classic typology, offering a contemporary retreat that honors its cultural and architectural roots.

The Bengalis House Gallery:

Text by the Architects: The reference point of the composition was the pre-existing building of the site, located on the coast of Kastelokampos. It was built on the basis of empirical folk know-how .It was characterized by the diversity associated with folk art and tradition and had many elements reminiscent of foreign “bungalows”.
