A Dream Home Where Family Life Takes Center Stage
Nestled on the southern slope above the city center of Esslingen, Germany, House FMB is a modern architectural masterpiece designed by Fuchs Wacker Architekten BDA. Completed in 2016, this family home was created to fulfill a simple yet profound wish from its owners: a house where the children could play. For architect Stephan Fuchs and project manager Michael Gehrmann, this wish became the foundation of a residence that is as functional as it is beautiful.
“When someone pursues their life’s dream while keeping an eye on everyday family life, it results in a truly beautiful house,” shared Stephan Fuchs in an interview with Luxury Houses Magazine. “A home where aesthetics, atmosphere, and functionality come together to form a harmonious whole.”

Blending Elegance with the Natural Landscape
The second wish of the homeowners was equally important: a house that blends seamlessly into its surroundings while demonstrating elegance, openness, and self-confidence. The result is House FMB, a family home that nestles flat against the southern slope, maintaining a low profile that respects the natural landscape and the property above Esslingen’s bustling city center.

From the outdoor seating area with its small maple tree, the living and dining spaces, and the home office, panoramic windows offer breathtaking views of the city’s proud towers, medieval half-timbered houses, and the forests and mountains beyond.
“Our goal was to create a house that respects its environment while offering expansive views and a sense of openness,” explained the architect to Luxury Houses Magazine. “It’s a balance between modesty and modern elegance.”

Spaces Designed for Play and Connection
At the heart of the house is its focus on family life and play. The sheltered courtyard in front of the garages and the ramp to the street provide ample space for the children and their friends to ride go-carts and play freely. When they return, sweaty and dirty from a day of fun, they have their own entrance, where sneakers can be casually tossed into a corner.

The garden features a soccer goal, ensuring that the spirit of play is always present. In the evening, when guests arrive, they are greeted by a slim, white spiral staircase in the hall—a striking architectural feature that serves as both a functional element and a sculpture.

“Every spiral staircase wants to be a sculpture, and this one truly is,” noted a local architectural critic when speaking to Luxury Houses Magazine. “It draws the eye upward and adds a sense of drama to the entrance.”

From Public to Private: A Carefully Curated Flow
Fuchs Wacker Architekten BDA has crafted House FMB to flow seamlessly from public to semi-public to private spaces. The design offers generous openness in the common areas, while maintaining discreet boundaries for more intimate settings. Whether it’s children playing in the courtyard, reading a novel on the terrace, or spending a cozy evening by the fireplace, every room in House FMB is designed to offer breadth and light.

“The house invites both play and relaxation,” said the homeowners in a brief statement to Luxury Houses Magazine. “It’s a space where our family can grow, and where every visitor feels welcome.”
Luxury Houses Magazine attempted to contact the homeowners for further insights into their experience living in House FMB, but no response was received by the time of publication.
