Description About The Project

Sam’s Creek House, a testament to modern living designed by Bates Masi Architects. Influenced by the multitasking lifestyle of the clients, this home seamlessly blends diverse activities within its walls. Imagine hosting a dinner party while entertaining children, or welcoming guests without disrupting family life – Sam’s Creek House makes it all possible.

A series of open-ended boxes, tailored to specific architectural programs, creates a dynamic visual experience both inside and out. Mahogany boards wrap around these boxes, enhancing perspectives and ensuring privacy. Each box operates autonomously with independent audio, video, and climate control, allowing for simultaneous events without interference.

The exterior showcases travertine flooring and cladding, arranged using a custom hanging system. This stone exterior pays homage to the local wood shingle vernacular while adding a touch of modernity. Interstitial spaces between the boxes become enchanting gardens and patios, creating seamless transitions.

Sam’s Creek House redefines the chaos of multitasking, bringing order through architecture. This residence not only accommodates the busy lifestyle of its owners but also provides a sanctuary from the hustle, creating a harmonious balance between functionality and tranquility.

At the heart of the home, a fireplace becomes both a utilitarian object and a sculptural work of art. Crafted with overlapping, repeating bronze components, it supports lateral loads and adds a unique touch to the dining and living room. The master bedroom features a headboard constructed with repeating strips of belting leather, echoing the home’s thoughtful design.

The client’s new home allows them to keep up with their busy lifestyle while also providing respite from it.

The master bedroom features a headboard constructed with repeating strips of belting leather, echoing the home’s thoughtful design.

Text by the Architects: We live in a time where smart phones and tablets are in everyone’s hands and multitasking is the normal way of life. Influenced from the client’s multitasking lifestyle, a diverse set of requirements developed for a new home.  The clients, one of whom is the owner of a public relations company, requested that multiple activities could take place throughout the house without interruption; a dinner party could take place while simultaneously entertaining a group of children, or guests could come and go without disturbing the rest of the family. These programmatic requests diagrammatically divide the site as well as establish view corridors from front to back. Transparency through the house puts simultaneous activities on display, and provides a setting where guests can see and be seen.
