Architecture Design of Sunridge House
Description About The Project
Sunridge House by McClean Design, nestled in the resort town of Whistler, British Columbia, seventy-eight miles north of Vancouver, stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity in the face of severe winter weather. The 6,187-square-foot lot presents a steep, rocky terrain, making this McClean Design’s first encounter with such challenging conditions.
“The house appears to be built into the rock hillside. It feels anchored and somewhat stoic. We love the contrast between the rugged cliff faces and rigor and clean lines of the architecture,” the architect notes. Indeed, the house seems to meld seamlessly with the solid mountain rock, embodying a sense of permanence and resilience.
The stone-clad exteriors and warm interior palette draw inspiration from traditional ski chalets, utilizing extensive wood throughout the home but reimagined in a contemporary style. Positioned at the base of the ski slopes, the residence also caters to summer outdoor living with a swimming pool and spa. A local artist’s totem pole adds a unique cultural touch, fitting snugly into a vertical niche outside the house.
The three-level home is designed for both comfort and hosting large gatherings. The basement level features a two-car garage, a spa and gym, a family room, a media room, two bedrooms, and a kitchen. The main floor includes two additional bedrooms, dining, and living areas. The upper level is dedicated to the master bedroom suite and two smaller bedrooms.
Materials like basalt and Carrara marble contrast with extensive oak and walnut, creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere perfect for snowy nights. While the house’s refined materials speak to luxury, the exterior site walls, finished in rough stone, blend harmoniously with the mountainous landscape, mimicking the natural surroundings.
