Iyashi House beckons visitors to embrace a moment of tranquility, transcending digital distractions to immerse themselves in the soothing symphony of silence and the subtle allure of suburban nature. With eyes closed, the essence of ‘Iyashi’—healing, rejuvenation, serenity—begins to permeate the senses, enveloping guests in a cocoon of natural light and picturesque serenity. Nestled in the serene lakeside suburb of Bandung, Indonesia, this private 3-bedroom residence is a sanctuary designed for a couple’s retirement and familial gatherings.

Concealed by perimeter walls and bordered by an ascending walkway adorned with Alang Alang grass, the entrance unfolds into an interior courtyard adorned with bespoke concrete tiles and a solitary evergreen tree. Architectural juxtapositions abound, from the meticulously finished cast-in-situ concrete to the matte steel supports and Ironwood roof ceilings. The distinctive Japanese-inspired roofs, with their ‘semi-floating’ appearance and elongated overhangs, create a striking silhouette against the sky.

Comprising two interconnected, south-facing buildings and a north-facing structure housing service facilities and a car garage, the design optimizes environmental harmony with the Sundanese climate. The left building encompasses double-tiered private living quarters, while the right building features an open-plan kitchen, dining area, and expansive living room flowing seamlessly into an outdoor terrace and grass lawn. The terrace, crowned by a cantilevering overhang, frames the lakeside vista, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor realms.

Material selection plays a pivotal role in the project’s narrative, with Andesite stone tiles in the living room transitioning gracefully to Ulin Wood decking on the terrace, each chosen to age with natural elegance over time. The terrace emerges as the architectural protagonist, embodying the essence of ‘Iyashi House’ and its quest for a harmonious synthesis of indoor and outdoor living.

Situated in a serene lakeside suburb of Bandung, Indonesia, the house offers picturesque views and a connection to nature.

Sharp contrasts between cast-in-situ concrete, matte steel supports, and Ironwood roof ceilings contribute to the house’s distinctive aesthetic.

The entrance opens into an interior courtyard adorned with bespoke concrete tiles and a solitary evergreen tree, creating a serene transition between the exterior and interior.

Text by the Architects: At first glance, ‘Iyashi House’ provokes its visitors to close their eyes, let go of digital distractions and disregard, if only for a moment, the views of the surrounding landscape and otherwise architectural finesse that characterizes the house altogether. In the absence of the visual dimension, one can begin to perceive the emerging sound of silence within the space, complemented by distant undertones of suburban nature. A sensation of soft breeze pulsates through the house, leaving the only tangible demarcation of indoor and outdoor tethered to the material and textural transitions beneath one’s bare feet.

The Japanese word ‘Iyashi’ bears the meaning of healing, rejuvenation or sense of serenity. This house is designed as a kind of domestic sanctum, immersed in silence, natural light and picturesque scenery. ‘Iyashi House’ is a 3 bedroom private residence nestled in a serene lakeside suburb of Bandung Indonesia, conceived as a couple’s retirement home and a place of gathering for their extended family and friends.
