Architecture Design of Clifton House

Description About The Project

Clifton House designed by Malan Vorster Architecture Interior Design, located in the picturesque suburb of Clifton along Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard, foot traffic thrives thanks to the stunning scenery, attracting both residents and tourists who are enthusiastic about jogging and strolling. The design of homes in this area typically features imposing boundary walls and large structures, but this house breaks the mold.

Rather than hiding behind barriers, this residence embraces visibility from the street, contributing to the neighborhood’s ambiance. Attention to detail is evident in the landscaping, especially at sidewalk level, blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment and neighboring properties.

Elevated living spaces, supported by gabion walls, not only maximize views but also mitigate the impact of the building’s mass. By utilizing smaller volumes and thinner structural elements, the design achieves an organic, stacked appearance. Even the garage, adorned with gabion walls that will eventually be covered in foliage, softens the streetscape.

Positioned between lower and higher properties, the house engages differently with the hillside across its multiple levels. The main residence, resembling boulders atop the hill, is divided into three concrete blocks connected by a spacious atrium, creating a dynamic living space.

Indoor and outdoor areas seamlessly blend, extending into a landscaped courtyard designed for optimal sunlight exposure. The kitchen even connects directly to a vegetable and herb garden, enhancing the home’s connection to nature.

Careful consideration of materials and energy-efficient features ensures sustainable living. From board-marked concrete to Corten steel, each material will age gracefully, reflecting the passage of time and enriching the character of the home.

Overall, this residence in Clifton exemplifies thoughtful design, harmonizing with its surroundings while offering modern comfort and sustainability.

The Clifton House Gallery:

Text by the Architects: The suburb of Clifton on Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard has a high rate of foot traffic due to it’s scenic beauty, with residents and tourists being keen joggers and walkers. It was a deliberate design intention to take this fact into consideration – in a neighborhood characterized by high blank boundary walls and overpowering building mass.
