Description About The Project

Elk Range Overlook is a home in the United States designed by CCY Architects. The land where the house was built sloped, which presented challenges but also opportunities. The architects put a lot of effort into integrating the house into the topography, to connect indoor spaces to the outdoor landscape while preserving the site’s natural character.

On the other hand, the house takes advantage of the sloping topography to face the beautiful mountain views. The approach to the house begins from an access road above, and the entry drive descends through stone and boulder retaining walls set within native landscaping. Also, the driveway alignment and procession invite views over the home to the Elk Mountain Range beyond, allowing the house to quietly reveal itself within its natural setting.

The house’s design includes strong building forms, natural materials, and exposed structure that create a rich dialogue with the natural landscape. The house is energy-efficient, with a solar photovoltaic and battery storage system, passive approaches to daylighting, and seasonal sun control. Sustainable and durable materials were chosen, such as farm-raised Port Orford Cedar, which used in many applications to create a strong, crafted, and warm character. Water features also integrated into the design, provide visible and audible tranquility to gathering spaces inside and outside the house and connecting it to nature.
