Architecture Design of Shade House

Description About The Project

Shade House, designed by Ayutt and Associates Design (AAd), presents an innovative solution to urban living, merging modern architecture with a sustainable natural ecosystem. Located in the bustling city of Bangkok, the house is crafted for a nature-loving couple and embodies a vision where the surrounding greenery plays a central role. Initially designed as a two-story residence, the layout evolved into a three-story structure with a detached parking area, maximizing green space by over 60%. Through pocket gardens, a green roof, and vegetation that envelops the house, the greenery is planned to expand by 150% as the ecosystem grows.

A defining feature of Shade House is its elevated swimming pool on the second floor, nestled among tree canopies, offering a serene connection to the sky and surrounding nature. The house is divided into independent functional units across each floor, ensuring both privacy and connectivity. The ground floor features a guest suite with direct access to a waterfall and garden, while the second and third floors house private living spaces for the owners. Each level is designed to immerse the residents in nature, with large windows framing views of the greenery, pool, and landscape beyond.

AAd’s signature design approach is evident in the house’s perforated aluminum façade, which mimics tree leaves and creates a natural cooling system. These panels reduce the temperature inside the house by 13 degrees Celsius, while allowing filtered light and air to flow through. At night, the house glows like a lantern, providing privacy without revealing the interior.

The design also incorporates slender white steel rods that form a sculptural frame around the property, creating an intriguing play of light, shadow, and shade. The rods provide security while blending seamlessly with the natural environment, and over time, ivy is expected to grow along the frames, further integrating the house with the landscape.

In a nod to Thai culture, a tranquil Buddha pavilion, enclosed in glass and framed by steel rods, is placed in the center of the garden. This pavilion serves as a peaceful meditation space, connecting the homeowners with nature. Shade House’s landscape is thoughtfully designed to evolve, with rice terraces, a reflecting pool, and a rooftop fruit garden. Over time, the house will become a living canvas, where the owners can create their own vibrant ecosystem, growing together with the greenery around them.

The Shade House Gallery:

Text by the Architects: Shade House, a self-sustainable residence, implanted with an individual natural ecosystem that planned to become a part of a larger urban ecology and a solution for next generation of housing. Principally, AAd targets the issue by lessening the superior role of the house, though increasing the importance of natural surrounding as the main protagonist of this project.
