Architecture Design of Sunny Side House
Description About The Project
Sunny Side House, meticulously crafted by Wallflower Architecture + Design, envisioned to encapsulate the essence of family living and togetherness. The client’s vision was for a home where formalities and rigid cultural hierarchies gave way to spaces that fostered natural bonding and shared experiences.
In the context of Asian architecture, it’s essential for a home not to be perceived as lower in status than the surrounding public areas. The artful manipulation of topography, with an upturned boundary edge, creates a sense of grandeur and extends the living space into lush green surroundings. This perceived spaciousness remains exclusive to the family, concealed by slated boundary fencing and a row of bamboo that cool the breeze and act as a natural sunscreen for the 1st storey.
The second storey dedicated to bedrooms, thoughtfully aligned along the outer edge to afford each room generous private views. Timber screens, carefully designed to filter rather than block harsh sunlight, prevent excessive heat gain while still allowing natural light and ventilation. These screens also provide privacy and can be manually adjusted to individual preferences.
The top floor adopts a lighter aesthetic, surrounded by expansive glass fenestration supporting an overhanging roof. This design not only reduces visual mass but also offers unobstructed panoramic views. A portion of the top floor serves as a recreational space, ideal for watching football league matches, a beloved tradition for the family. Complete with a foosball table, open pantry, and a guest room for overnight stays, it’s the perfect setting for post game excitement and cherished gatherings with friends and family. Sunny Side House is a testament to the seamless blend of architectural ingenuity and familial warmth.

Text by the Architects: The site would not appeal to most local homebuyer as it immediately ticks several negative boxes for what deemed liabilities in a residential semi detached plot. It is long and narrow, with both the long side and front facing the western afternoon sun. The plot lies a metre below a public road that bounds the front and the ‘sunny’ side. In the local context, there would be environmental, layout and cultural issues to overcome.
