Architecture Design of K House

Description About The Project

K House by Atelier Design N Domain that has masterfully transformed an existing family home in a tropical village on the outskirts of Bombay, India, into a contemporary masterpiece. Originally a traditional farmhouse built in the early 90s, the house was redesigned to embrace the tropical context and enhance connectivity with its natural surroundings.

The design challenge involved retaining the original structural beam-column-slab while integrating modern architectural elements. ADND opened up the plan to maximize natural light and ventilation, merging indoor and outdoor spaces seamlessly. The lower level features a robust stone mass, symbolizing the house’s connection to nature, while the upper structure is enveloped in a lightweight wooden brise soleil, reflecting tropical architectural principles.

A large, open double veranda serves as the nucleus of the house, offering a smooth transition from indoor to semi-outdoor and outdoor spaces. This design not only shades the interiors from the tropical sun but also captures natural breezes, creating a harmonious interaction with the landscape. The entrance, highlighted by a rock installation and guiding walls, leads to a new clubhouse annexure.

By respecting the original structure and incorporating sustainable materials sourced within a 5km radius, ADND achieved a design that is both inclusive and sustainable. The transformation of K House is a testament to ADND’s sensitivity to context, materiality, and the seamless integration of old and new architectural elements.

The K House Gallery:

Text by the Architects: ADND LLP- An existing family home set in a tropical village on outskirts of Bombay, India is given a new modern avatar and annexure befitting the tropical context. Its contemporary lines and new façade seamlessly transform the old structure into a new composition. ADND LLP- The Project, when it entered the studio, faced the challenge of retaining the original structural beam-column-slab. While the original spaces had potential in terms of their scale and proportion, they lacked the inclusivity of a tropical design. The structure sat on the site, ignoring its landscape, creating no engagement in terms of visual delight or making the inside-outside space more interactive.
