Architecture Design of Sailing House

Description About The Project

Sailing House by IROJE KHM Architects is a breathtaking ode to seaside living, perched gracefully beside the Incheon Bridge. For the homeowner and their family, this coastal retreat represents the culmination of a nomadic urban existence, offering a space to dream of an unpredictable yet aspirational future while gazing out over the endless sea.

The design of the house is centered around a twisted observation axis, offering sweeping vistas of the sea. Each room is strategically angled to capture picturesque views and avoid neighboring structures, creating a dynamic and ever evolving architectural form. The outdoor terraces attached to each room provide a panoramic backdrop of the Incheon Sea, connected by floating walkways that double as sea-facing observatories and elements shaping an intimate courtyard.

A unique feature of the house is the introduction of water as an architectural element, whether in the form of a stream, pond, or waterfall. This incorporation seamlessly bridges the gap between land and sea, enhancing the visual connection to the natural surroundings.

In a society where family gatherings are infrequent, the design emphasizes a theatrical public living space with panoramic sea views. This space serves as a conduit for family members to connect as they traverse through individual rooms.

Sailing House stands as a metaphorical sailing ship of life, where each family member embarks on a journey toward an unpredictable and wishful future, forever gazing over the horizon of the sea. It’s a tribute to the beauty of coastal living and the endless possibilities it offers.

The incorporation of the concave curve reminiscent of traditional Korean architecture is akin to the dynamic sail of a ship at sea, adding a touch of Korean identity and embracing the essence of the seaside location.

In the outdoor terraces of each room, one can enjoy the panoramic scenery of the Incheon Sea, and every terrace is connected with flying promenades which are observatory toward the sea and spatial element for the composition of the introvert courtyard surrounded by them.

The Sailing House Gallery:

Text by the Architects: The owner of this house and his family selected this recreational seaside residential site beside Incheon Bridge as their last nest of life after finishing their nomadic life as urbanites of modern society. They wanted to dream about their unpredictable future of wishful life, looking over the horizon of the sea.
