A Lakefront Home Rooted in Tradition and Modernity
Nestled on the serene banks of Lake Tegernsee in Bad Wiessee, Germany, Splendid View by SAOTA reinterprets local architectural traditions through a refined contemporary lens. This family residence embraces the vernacular pitched-roof language and prescribed material palette enforced by local authorities while achieving a timeless architectural statement.
The architects at SAOTA explained to Luxury Houses Magazine: “Our challenge was to respect the regional identity while creating a residence that feels international, elegant, and modern. Splendid View is our response to both context and contemporary living.”

Architectural Composition and Material Palette
The residence is composed of two distinct architectural gestures that harmonize with its surroundings. The plinth features traditional whitewashed walls, grounding the house in regional character. Above, the lighter pitched timber-framed upper floor floats with precision, balancing warmth and modern sophistication.
By orienting the pitched roof toward the South, the design captures abundant natural light, while its scale and form frame sweeping lake and mountain views to the North. This duality of openness and protection ensures the home remains connected to its extraordinary landscape while maintaining a private, serene atmosphere.
SAOTA noted: “We wanted the house to breathe with its context—anchored in tradition below, yet open and contemporary above, where light and views define the experience.”

Balancing Proportion and Context
One of the guiding principles behind Splendid View was ensuring sensitivity to its surroundings. The building is carefully split into volumes, retaining the horizontal proportions characteristic of neighboring structures. This strategy not only respects the visual rhythm of the village but also allows the residence to separate private and entertainment spaces in a subtle, sophisticated way.
The heart of the home is articulated through a central courtyard and connecting bridge element, which creates a natural divide between the family’s private quarters and the social spaces intended for gatherings and lakefront enjoyment.
As SAOTA shared with Luxury Houses: “The courtyard became the pivotal gesture—an organizing device that gives clarity to the layout while creating a sheltered outdoor room within the home.”

Light, Views, and Atmosphere
The orientation of the roof pitch is not simply a regulatory response but an architectural tool. Facing South, it welcomes natural light deep into the interiors, reducing the reliance on artificial illumination and enhancing the warmth of everyday spaces. To the North, the pitched geometry frames iconic vistas of Lake Tegernsee and the Bavarian Alps, embedding the landscape as a constant presence in the family’s life.
Natural timber tones complement the crisp whiteness of the lower walls, generating a palette that feels both regional and contemporary. The interplay of textures establishes a tactile warmth, while expansive glass surfaces emphasize transparency and connectivity with the outdoors.
SAOTA reflected: “This project is about orchestrating light and views in a way that becomes part of the daily ritual. Every room holds a dialogue with the lake and the mountains.”

A Contemporary Bavarian Retreat
Splendid View by SAOTA is more than a residence; it is a dialogue between tradition and modernity, between context and individuality. Its pitched roof, white plinth, and timber elements pay homage to Bavarian vernacular, while its openness, light-filled interiors, and sculptural precision establish a vision of contemporary family living.
As the architects concluded: “The house is both deeply Bavarian and unmistakably contemporary. It honors its setting while offering the family a modern sanctuary on the water’s edge.”
