The Project “Residence KR” Information:

Architecture as an Extension of Family Life

Residence KR, designed by Caroline Andrusko Arquitetos, is an 800 m² residence in Curitiba, Paraná, created for a family of five. More than a house, it was envisioned as an architectural expression of the family’s values, affections, and lifestyle. With clean lines, pure volumes, and open-plan environments, the residence blurs the boundaries between space and experience, offering comfort, connection, and contemplation.

As Andrusko explained to Luxury Houses Magazine: “Our goal was to design a home that felt like a true extension of the family itself — where every material, texture, and space would reflect their way of living.”

Responding to Challenging Topography

The lot presented a significant elevation drop from the front to the back, which became one of the project’s key challenges. The solution was to design multiple levels, including mezzanines and double-height ceilings, to allow a fluid connection between spaces. This approach also enabled the creation of a generous leisure area — an essential request of the homeowners.

“We embraced the site’s complexity rather than fighting against it,” said the architect. “The different levels gave us opportunities to create richer spatial experiences and connect interiors with the landscape in a natural way.”

Open Spaces for Living and Gathering

The residence unfolds through an inviting double-height entrance hall that leads into expansive living and dining areas. A sculptural staircase connects to the mezzanine, where a home office and cinema overlook the social core. Upstairs, the three suites and gym balance privacy with warmth, while the ground floor hosts a guest suite, gourmet kitchen, and fluid transitions to the backyard.

The outdoor living area becomes an extension of the house, complete with a pool, jacuzzi, bar, and open-air lounge. Wide glass doors dissolve the barrier between interior and exterior, allowing family and guests to seamlessly enjoy both.

As the design team noted: “For us, architecture is not only about form — it is about the rituals of family life, and the ability to share moments together.”

Light, Materials, and Atmosphere

Lighting was treated as a central design tool, with automated systems creating both visual drama and thermal efficiency. Delicate curtains filter daylight, while the stretched mesh-backed bookcase glows as a luminous sculptural element in the social areas.

Wooden ceilings, mashrabiyas, and natural stone highlight the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. A striking Nuvolato marble staircase becomes a centerpiece, adding elegance and fluidity. Every surface was curated with attention to texture, color, and tactile sensation, reinforcing a sense of emotional belonging.

“We believe light is architecture’s most powerful material,” shared Caroline Andrusko. “It defines how a space feels, how it changes through time, and how it connects us emotionally to the home.”

Sustainability and Emotional Curatorship

Sustainability is embedded throughout the residence. Solar panels, energy-efficient pool reheating, and smart automation for temperature, ventilation, and curtains ensure long-term efficiency. Beyond technology, the home was also designed with emotional resonance in mind.

Artworks, design pieces, and bespoke details enrich the interiors, with special emphasis on a painting by Brazilian artist Gonçalo Ivo, a work chosen by the family for its personal meaning. This piece, evoking the warmth of sunlight, embodies the deep relationship between architecture, art, and memory.
