Description About The Project

Charmed House designed by The Ranch, to offer a new modern home as a surprise for a homeowner’s wife. The task was to replace the outdated ranch house in Phoenix’s Arcadia neighborhood, which the family had outgrown after eight years and three children. Despite the risks involved, the surprise was a success, and the family finally attained their dream home—a two-story, multigenerational contemporary residence tailored to their personalities and lifestyle.

The property features a main house for the family and a wheelchair-accessible guest house for the grandparents. The main house is conceptually designed with black brick volumes and pocketing and sliding glass doors that open to the front and back yards on the first floor, while a white stucco box forms the second floor. Wood accents highlight the home’s openings, including the front door and the glass doors leading to the yards.

The first floor houses the primary living spaces, primary suite, guest bedroom, and gym. The second floor includes all the children’s bedrooms, a den, a homework area, and a laundry room. The detached guest house is positioned on the east side of the backyard, creating a courtyard around the existing pool, which was preserved.

Text by the Architects: In 2020, The Ranch Mine received a very unusual project inquiry, which was the first in the firm’s history. The scope of the inquiry was not unusual: a new modern home to replace the ranch house in the Arcadia neighborhood in Phoenix, Arizona, which they had outgrown while having 3 children over the past 8 years
