A Contemporary Dialogue Between Architecture and Landscape

Set in the exclusive Pedralbes neighborhood of Barcelona, the Pedralbes House by internationally acclaimed firm SAOTA emerges as a sculptural response to its extraordinary setting. Nestled on the slopes of the Collserola National Park, the residence is carefully orchestrated to maximize sweeping views of the Catalan capital below, while engaging intimately with the surrounding natural environment.

“The design is very much a response to the topography and climate of the site,” says SAOTA in an interview with Luxury Houses Magazine. “We envisioned a home that would open itself entirely to the panoramic cityscape while remaining grounded in the calmness of its mountain setting.”

Architectural Composition and Spatial Experience

The home is structured across multiple levels, cascading gently down the hillside. Its defining characteristic is a series of horizontal planes that float with lightness and intent. These linear forms not only respond to the slope of the site but also create expansive terraces, overhangs, and shaded outdoor zones that blur the boundaries between inside and out.

At ground level, open-plan living and dining spaces stretch toward the South-facing garden, offering unobstructed access to an outdoor entertainment terrace and an infinity-edged pool that visually dissolves into the landscape. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass panels allow these spaces to dissolve entirely, turning the interior into a fluid extension of the garden.

“The language of horizontality and layering became a key architectural gesture,” explains project architect Philip Olmesdahl. “It allowed us to create a structure that breathes with the landscape, constantly shifting between exposure and shelter.”

Materiality and Light

Pedralbes House is clad in a restrained palette of natural stone, timber, and textured plaster—materials chosen for their ability to patinate gracefully and ground the home within the Mediterranean landscape. Light is used sculpturally: strategically placed skylights and clerestory windows introduce controlled daylight deep into the plan, while timber brise-soleil elements modulate solar exposure throughout the day.

A dramatic double-volume central atrium draws the eye upward, accentuating the vertical flow of the home and allowing for cross-ventilation and thermal chimney effects, reducing the reliance on mechanical cooling.

A Harmonious Interior Landscape

The interiors are marked by clean lines, tactile finishes, and an earthy color palette that echoes the palette of the Collserola hills. Custom furnishings and art pieces selected in collaboration with local artisans provide warmth and contextual identity.

Private bedroom suites are positioned on the upper level, with each space oriented to enjoy uninterrupted views over Barcelona. These intimate zones offer a contrast to the public living areas, ensuring a sense of retreat and tranquility for residents.

Luxury Houses attempted to reach the current homeowners to understand more about their daily experience of living in this architectural jewel, but no response was received by press time.

A Modernist Tribute to the Catalan Landscape

Completed in 2023, Pedralbes House is more than a luxury residence—it is a finely tuned architectural instrument that interprets its context with precision and sensitivity. It speaks to the core principles of Mediterranean modernism while embracing contemporary innovations in sustainability, spatial design, and material expression.

“Pedralbes House exemplifies our ongoing pursuit of homes that are as much about their setting as they are about shelter,” notes Antoni. “It’s a place where the architecture becomes a lens through which to experience light, view, and tranquility.”
