Hawaan 5085 House, designed by Kevin Lloyd Architects, is an exquisite example of contemporary architectural design situated in the premier gated estate of Umhlanga, Durban. The house is meticulously crafted with an H-shaped layout on the ground floor, which seamlessly extends into the upper level, albeit without the middle section, to comply with estate width restrictions. The top floor comprises two wings: one featuring a guest bedroom and the other housing the main bedrooms, each with separate dressing and bathroom areas.

The residence is characterized by two distinct staircases leading to the upper floor, where the husband’s study provides privacy and seclusion, while the lower level mirrors the main bedroom wing, with a gym replacing the second dressing room and the wife’s study/home office adjacent to it. The dining room and kitchen open onto a protected garden court, featuring a rill and a small deck for leisure activities. The architectural design emphasizes a large, wide terrace with a fireplace and built-in bar, overlooking a raised lap pool that serves as the focal point of the house. The ground floor also includes a double garage, guest WC, entrance hall, laundry and scullery, lounge, dining room, gym, bedroom, study, and dressing room.

The materials used in the construction include clay imperial brick, smooth plaster, aluminum windows and doors, painted galvanized steel structure, porcelain tiled floors, concrete roof, and natural grey balau decking and screens. The architectural style harmoniously blends imperial Indian and colonial period décor internally, while maintaining a contemporary exterior. The house is designed to adapt to the clients’ needs, with studies that can be converted into additional bedrooms if required, and is situated on a flat site within the estate, providing panoramic sea views and protection from coastal winds, making it a true architectural marvel.
