Architecture Design of Mehul Patel Residence

Description About The Project

Mehul Patel Residence, designed by Groundwork Architecture, is a stunning home located in the western part of Ahmedabad, in Bopal. Built on a 1560 sq. mt plot, this residence is crafted for a family of five, including private living areas, formal and family dining spaces, a kitchen, an entertainment room, and four bedrooms. The client’s vision was to create a home that seamlessly integrates an open-to-sky courtyard, central to the living areas, while adhering to Vaastu principles for the overall layout.

From the outset, the design focused on using materials that convey a timeless aesthetic. Exposed concrete and natural brick were chosen as the main construction materials, creating a robust and simple architectural detailing without the need for added plaster layers. The main entrance, accessible from the north, features parking for three cars directly from the main street, allowing the pedestrian entrance to the house to remain undisturbed, with emergency vehicle access when needed.

The courtyard serves as the central organizing element of the home, with an entrance vestibule leading through the entrance porch to an ambulatory corridor that surrounds it. This corridor connects all spaces, seamlessly integrating them with the courtyard. Upon entering, visitors are greeted with a unique experience as the courtyard is initially hidden from view, creating a surprising reveal when turning onto the main corridor, where the Puja room in the NE corner becomes visible.

The main corridor offers a full view of the courtyard on one side, with the double-height formal living room on the left. The formal living room is the last semi-private space, transitioning to more private areas of the house. A straight-flight folded plate staircase along this corridor visually connects the courtyard and open spaces to the east through a verandah. The SE corner of the house houses the kitchen, well-connected to the dining and family living areas. The west wing is dedicated to bedrooms with toilets and walk-in wardrobes on both floors, with light wells providing natural light to the bathrooms. The entertainment area, with a home theatre, is situated above the family living area.

The ground floor courtyard is completely open, providing physical access and visual connection. Terracotta jalis around the first-floor corridor perimeter reduce direct sunlight and create ever-changing patterns of light and shadow. The courtyard, combined with plants, helps cool the house and offers a private space to enjoy open areas. The facades are thoughtfully articulated to respond to the climate, using simple forms and materials to create a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing design.

Text by the Architects: The residence for Mr Mehul Patel is built on land of 1560 sq. mt and is in the western part of Ahmedabad in the Bopal. The client is a real estate developer working on various residential and commercial projects in Ahmedabad. Their brief for us was to design a house for their family of 5 people with private living areas, including formal and family living dining, kitchen, entertainment room and 4 bedrooms. Beyond the functional requirements, they were keen to build a house with an open-to-sky courtyard, which could become integral to the living areas. The requirement was to use Vaastu principles to organize the overall layout.
