Architecture Design of Horizons House

Description About The Project

Horizons House, designed by Signum Architecture, serves as a tranquil sanctuary set within Petaluma, California, where sweeping views of nearby hills meet a sense of refined privacy. Returning to the same clients from an earlier project, this home reflects both their vision for a peaceful retreat and the surrounding site’s unique character. Nestled among farmlands and recent developments, the house is oriented diagonally across its east-west axis, carefully positioned to capture unobstructed westerly views while shielding from afternoon winds and neighboring homes.

The architecture of Horizons House centers around two intersecting axes. The primary axis, aligned with the landscape’s view, features walls of native stone, while the secondary stucco-clad axis creates a strong perpendicular line. At their intersection lies the main entry, an all-glass portal that immediately frames the distant views and a linear pool. Designed with simplicity and functionality, the house comprises two bedrooms and a separate studio, with public and private spaces separated by a glassed-in entry. A minimalist interior with 11-foot ceilings and expansive glazing enhances the home’s airy quality, while flat roofs, deep overhangs, and a black steel trellis over the rear façade connect the design to its natural surroundings.

The Horizons House Gallery:

Text by the Architects: Our clients for this project are old friends, a couple who had worked with us on an earlier residential renovation before moving to Silicon Valley. When they decided to return and settle in Petaluma, we picked up where we had left off. Set in town, the site for this project lies between old farms and new development, surrounded by homes but with a clear view of the hills to the west.
