Architecture Design of Le Kawan House
Description About The Project
Kawan House, a masterpiece crafted by W+M Design Studio, inspired by the breathtaking forest surroundings and the traditional Javanese ‘Joglo’ house that once graced the site. When the family’s needs outgrew the existing Joglo, new structures were introduced, seamlessly harmonizing with the traditional abode while infusing a modern twist.
Preserving the Joglo’s architectural essence, characterized by rhythmic slim wooden columns and massive stone walls, Le Kawan House embraces a palette of existing materials – wood, sandstone, terrazzo, and colored cement tiles. This forms the foundation for designing the Pavilion, Bungalow, and Staff Quarter, each contributing a unique touch to the complex.
Every detail reflects thoughtful design, with bathrooms echoing the Joglo’s materials – vibrant-colored cement tiles on the walls, muted terrazzo on the floors, and ‘keepsake’ wooden louvers for windows that ensure both air circulation and privacy. Le Kawan House stands as a testament to the seamless integration of tradition and modernity, creating a living space that is both timeless and contemporary.

The Le Kawan House Gallery:
Text by the Architects: When we visited the site, we were mesmerized by the forest surroundings and a beautiful traditional Javanese house called ‘Joglo’ that the family used to live in occasionally. That house was no longer sufficient to accommodate the client’s needs, so they needed to build other buildings as an extra living space. As the traditional house is preserved, the new buildings are designed to harmonize with the traditional house – with a modern twist.
