Nestled in the foothills of Las Vegas, Nevada, the Sunset Summit Residence by Cushing Terrell is a stunning example of contemporary desert architecture. Designed to harmonize with its arid surroundings while maximizing panoramic views, this home achieves an exquisite balance of design, engineering, and comfort. Positioned on a five-acre lot within the exclusive development, The Summit, this residence captures breathtaking 360-degree vistas, from the striking desert landscape to the shimmering lights of the Las Vegas Strip.

“The idea was to create a calm, tranquil, spa-like feeling that softened the edges of modern design and felt very livable,” shared lead architect Jesse Vigil of Cushing Terrell in an interview with Luxury Houses Magazine. “We wanted the home to embrace its surroundings while also feeling like a retreat from the energy of the city.”

A Visionary Layout for Luxurious Living

Spanning an impressive 14,500 square feet, Sunset Summit Residence is complemented by a 3,500-square-foot guest house, a 1,400-square-foot pool casita, and a 2,700-square-foot garage. Despite the scale, every architectural and interior detail was meticulously curated to create a sense of warmth and cohesion.

“Rather than orienting the primary living areas toward the city, we chose to rotate the original plan 180 degrees, allowing the home’s indoor and outdoor spaces to take full advantage of the natural beauty of the surrounding Nevada landscape,” Vigil explained. “This decision transformed the way the home interacts with its environment.”

Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Integration

A defining feature of Sunset Summit Residence is its fluid connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Floor-to-ceiling windows retract completely into the walls, erasing any distinction between the home’s expansive interior and its outdoor entertaining areas. The residence’s open floor plan is ideal for both intimate gatherings and large-scale events, with a chef’s kitchen featuring three ovens, two islands, and a sunken wet bar with seating that extends outdoors.

“Indoor-outdoor living was a major priority for this project,” noted a representative from Cushing Terrell. “By integrating retractable walls and natural materials, we ensured that the home would feel effortlessly connected to the Las Vegas desert landscape.”

Architectural Excellence Meets Functional Elegance

The home’s exterior is clad in Gridworx, a cladding system that holds 1.5-inch-thick quartzitic sandstone panels, complementing the natural hues of the Nevada desert. The choice of materials was both aesthetic and functional, with seven inches of insulation between the sandstone and the interior’s marble, quartzite, and plaster finishes, ensuring exceptional temperature regulation. Triple-paned windows further mitigate the desert’s temperature extremes, enhancing energy efficiency and comfort.

A signature highlight of Sunset Summit Residence is its custom-designed knife-edge pool, mirroring the home’s architectural contours. The water’s edge seamlessly aligns with the surrounding deck, which features a slip-resistant extension of the home’s stone flooring. Just beyond, a pool casita equipped with a pizza oven and casual lounge seating provides a relaxed gathering space, perfect for entertaining guests after a refreshing swim.
