Living Along the Axis of Nature
Wing House stands at the edge of the heathland like a quiet gesture—an architectural response shaped not by spectacle but by sensitivity to place. Designed by STATE of Architecture, the residence unfurls in three expressive wings that extend across the terrain, creating a home defined by horizontality, movement, and stillness.
At its core lies the raised central axis—a linear volume that hosts the kitchen, dining area, and main living room. Elevated just enough to command sweeping views, this spine becomes the emotional and spatial heart of the home.
As the lead architect explains, “The central axis is the anchor. From it, the house grows outward in three directions, each wing negotiating a different relationship with the landscape.”
This approach gives Wing House its name—and its character. The home is not placed onto the site; it is shaped with it, stretching gently along natural sightlines and topographic cues.

An Expressive Composition of Wings
The three wings form a subtly asymmetrical layout, creating dynamic spatial flows while ensuring each part of the house engages directly with nature. By fragmenting the mass into smaller volumes, the architecture maintains a human scale despite its generous footprint.
One architect notes, “Instead of one statement volume, we created a composition—almost like a family of buildings in quiet conversation.”
This sense of rhythm extends throughout the home, expressed through staggered planes, varied rooflines, and gentle shifts in perspective as one moves through the spaces.

Architecture of Contrast and Rhythm
A Restrained, Formal Entrance
Approaching Wing House from the street, the design presents a composed and almost introverted façade. The integrated garage is discreetly absorbed into the architecture, while an intimate patio introduces a sheltered moment of arrival.
The design team describes this contrast: “The entrance is purposely held back. We wanted visitors to feel a sense of privacy and compression before the house releases them toward the landscape.”
Concrete, white stucco, and wood form a disciplined palette that supports this restrained expression, giving the entrance a quiet, sculptural presence.
An Open Embrace Toward the Landscape
Moving deeper into the home, the architecture shifts. The wings stretch open; glazing expands; daylight pours in.
The bedrooms in the rear wing open fully toward the garden, blurring the boundary between interior comfort and natural serenity. Every room is given a unique framed view—an intentional decision to anchor daily living in the rhythms of the outdoors.
“The house opens like a fan,” the architect remarks. “Every wing offers a different vantage point, so nature never feels static.”

Materiality Rooted in Warm Modernism
Material choices play a defining role in the emotional atmosphere of Wing House. The palette is calm yet tactile—concrete floors, wood-panelled ceilings, and white stucco walls that reflect soft natural light.
This minimal yet warm composition ensures the architecture never feels cold or austere. Instead, the materials amplify the surrounding colors of the heathland: warm browns, muted greens, and shifting greys.
The design team elaborates: “We use materiality as a way to slow down the perception of the home. The textures are gentle, the colors subdued, so the landscape becomes the strongest visual element.”
Within this restrained palette, moments of craftsmanship—precisely detailed joinery, refined proportions, and careful transitions—add layers of subtle luxury.

Spatial Flow Designed for Contemplation
Wing House is not a sequence of rooms but a sequence of moods. The central axis serves as a promenade of light, guiding residents toward different wings depending on time of day, season, or desired level of retreat.
Circulation is intuitive, with the architecture arranged to create a natural hierarchy of public and private zones. The shared spaces feel open and airy, while the bedroom wing offers refuge, quietness, and a close connection to the garden.
An architect shares, “We wanted the house to breathe—not just in terms of ventilation, but in terms of psychological space. Movement should feel effortless.”

A Villa That Breathes Calm
Every gesture in Wing House—from the orientation of windows to the texture of materials—contributes to an atmosphere of deep tranquility. This is a home designed not as an object, but as an experience.
Outdoor terraces extend the living areas; sheltered patios create pockets of shade; and the wings shield the garden from wind, enhancing comfort year-round. Nature is ever-present yet never overwhelming.
As the lead architect summarises, “Wing House is about balance. Geometry and softness. Openness and refuge. It’s a place where architecture steps back so life—and landscape—can take center stage.”
The result is a modern villa of quiet authority, grounded gracefully in its site and shaped by a profound respect for the natural world.
