AB House designed by Pitsou Kedem Architects, covers 770 square metres of a 1,800-square-metre plot in the Kfar Shmaryahu neighbourhood to the North of the Israeli city. The house comprises two interconnected volumes; a long exposed concrete box that extends into a reflecting pool, and a taller perpendicular rendered structure. Indeed, this house’s simple forms and finishes are typical of Kedem’s numerous projects in the Tel Aviv region. It includes a property featuring bands of shutters with a similar geometric pattern and a home surrounded by screens that reference traditional latticework.

The designer applied painted metal screens – that it describes as evocative of netting – to various external and internal surfaces. In addition to this, the screens with a perforated geometric pattern help to control ethereally the flow of light, air and views throughout this house. Inside the home, the pivoting sections integrated into a surface separating the living room, master bedroom from a poolside terrace. Also, the perforated pattern is repeated in elements including a black-painted balustrade that separates the kitchen and dining room from a staircase with cantilevered treads.

A white metal fence featuring geometric motifs meanders across the house’s perimeter, defining a series of partially enclosed areas serving as buffer zones between inside and outside.

Both of the two, central masses covered by a metal net, painted white. Also, the metal netting constructed in a recurring, geometric pattern. Hence, it allows light and air to enter the enclosed spaces as well as the interior and exterior areas that it combines.

At the entrance, the screens provide a partial view of the house stretching away towards the rear of the plot, and continue across a rendered wall containing the front door.

“Sometimes it closes, acting as an entrance whilst at other times it is inlaid with a system of pivoting doors that allow one of the facades to appear dynamic and ever changing,” they added.

Obviously, a metal wall that acts as a perforated balustrade for a floating staircase.

During the day, the metal netting allows natural light to enter the building, creating shadow pictures on the concrete surfaces. At night, the light expanding out from the house’s spaces and the garden, seeps out through the netting creating a “statue of light” on the plot.
