Description About The Project

Tera Shukrana House by Design Legends is a climate-responsive luxury residence in northern India that integrates passive cooling, strategic orientation, and spatial generosity to redefine contemporary living in extreme heat.

The Project “Tera Shukrana House” Information:

Tera Shukrana: Redefining Luxury Through Climate Intelligence

Designed by Design Legends, Tera Shukrana House emerges as a sophisticated response to the intense environmental conditions of northern India, where summer temperatures frequently rise to 45°C. Created for an NRI client with global exposure, the residence blends international standards of contemporary living with a deeply contextual understanding of climate, orientation, and spatial performance.

Rather than approaching luxury as purely aesthetic, the project reframes it as a synthesis of environmental intelligence, spatial generosity, and experiential comfort.

Spatial Volume as a Climatic Device

At the center of the home lies a dramatic 700-square-foot double-height living space that functions as both a social nucleus and an environmental moderator. The vertical volume encourages natural air movement while drawing daylight deep into the interior, creating a luminous spatial hierarchy.

“Volume was conceived not simply as a visual gesture but as a climatic strategy,” the architects explain. “The height amplifies airflow and light, making the space both dynamic and comfortable.”

Large expanses of glazing further dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior spaces. Carefully oriented and environmentally moderated, the glass façade maintains openness without exposing the home to excessive heat.

Extending from the main living space, a 1,100-square-foot pool lounge and deck create a transitional environment between architecture and landscape. Here, interior and exterior dissolve into a fluid spatial gradient that expands the living experience outward.

The Pool as Passive Cooling Infrastructure

A defining feature of the project is the swimming pool positioned along the windward edge of the residence. Rather than serving purely as a visual or recreational element, it functions as an integral part of the building’s passive cooling strategy.

As prevailing summer winds move across the pool’s surface and cascading water feature, evaporative cooling reduces air temperature before it reaches the building envelope. This cooled air is then drawn through the expansive double-height glazing into the living spaces.

“The pool operates as atmospheric infrastructure,” the design team notes. “It transforms natural airflow into a cooling system that enhances comfort without relying solely on mechanical intervention.”

The façade thus becomes a performative environmental membrane—an interface where architecture actively engages with its surrounding climate.

Orientation as Architectural Strategy

Solar orientation plays a central role in shaping the residence. The Eastern façade is designed to capture gentle morning light, allowing interiors to receive daylight deep into the morning while avoiding harsh afternoon exposure.

Northern glazing provides consistent, glare-free illumination with minimal heat gain, ensuring visual comfort across primary living spaces throughout the day.

Meanwhile, the southern edge—most vulnerable to intense solar radiation—is consolidated with service areas and utility spaces. This configuration forms a thermal buffer that protects the main living zones from excessive heat.

“Orientation became a discipline that guided the entire composition,” the architects share. “Every façade responds differently to the sun, turning environmental constraints into architectural opportunities.”

Seasonal adaptability is equally embedded in the design. The pool lodge, oriented eastward yet open toward the south, captures winter sunlight throughout the day, ensuring warmth and usability during cooler months.

Materiality and Enduring Design

The material palette reinforces the project’s commitment to durability and performance. High-quality glazing systems and thermally considered construction assemblies ensure the house maintains comfort while withstanding harsh climatic conditions.

The aesthetic language remains restrained yet tactile. Contemporary finishes are selected for longevity rather than trend, allowing proportion, light, and material integrity to define the architecture.

“Our goal was to create a home that ages gracefully,” the architects explain. “Material choices were guided by resilience as much as visual refinement.”

A New Vision of Luxury Living

Occupying a 10,000-square-foot plot, Tera Shukrana demonstrates how architecture can thrive within extreme climates without sacrificing spatial drama or contemporary elegance.

By collaborating with natural forces—wind, water, sunlight, and orientation—the residence achieves thermal comfort through intelligent design rather than excessive mechanical dependence.

In doing so, Design Legends present a new interpretation of luxury: one rooted not in excess, but in environmental harmony, spatial generosity, and enduring architectural performance.

Tera Shukrana ultimately transcends the idea of a bespoke villa, becoming an atmospheric instrument where architecture and climate operate in refined balance.
