Architecture Design of The House at Lizard Island
Description About The Project
The House at Lizard Island designed by JDA Co., drawing inspiration from the geology and marine life of the stunning reef location. Indeed, every aspect of The House intricately linked to its magical setting. Acting as a frame for its surroundings, the architectural plan takes cues from the graceful stingrays that glide just meters away. Also, thoughtfully placed narrow slit windows on the south and west sides serve as “gills,” guiding refreshing breezes and allowing The House to breathe on hot days.
On the other hand, the Ground Floor features a Garden Room that seamlessly merges indoor and outdoor spaces with its stone flooring. Upstairs, a burnished, polished concrete floor pays homage to the monumental granite shelf beneath The House. A central, curved stairwell serves as the heart of the building, effortlessly connecting different levels. The House also offers a roof terrace and spa, granting breathtaking 360-degree views of the landscape. Each of the three bedrooms is individually designed with ensuites, framing vistas of nearby and significant distant places. The top-floor bedroom frames views of Cooks Look, while the ground-level bedrooms overlook Hibiscus and Attenborough Beach.
Moreover, warmth and elegance permeate The House through the use of rosewood timber and copper materials. A large curving Emerald Quartzite kitchen bench resembles a conch shell, complementing the natural hues of the landscape and reef. The material selection intentionally maintains a restrained approach to ensure a deep connection with nature. Also, the exterior finish matches the interior, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, allowing residents to feel as though they are embraced by the natural elements.

Text by the Architects:
Crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches, and the tropical sting of heat and sweat on your skin. It’s Lizard Island. – 240 kilometers North of Cairns on the fringes of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. Home to unparalleled natural beauty and now ‘The House’ The House at Lizard Island – new architecturally designed accommodation deeply inspired by its place. Indeed, the House, designed by architects JDA Co., is a true passion project of owners Steve and Jane Wilson, borne from years of planning and a desire to create the greatest ‘reef house’ in the world, on a site Steve refers to as the “Bennelong Point of the Great Barrier Reef”.
