Reframing a Hillside Home Through Glass, Timber, and Landscape
Perched on a scenic hill in Surrey, Blackheath House by JK Designs Architects is a striking alteration project that reimagines an outdated face-brick dwelling as a refined contemporary residence. Overlooking dense woodland and rolling green hills, the redesign focuses on maximizing views, enhancing spatial flow, and reconnecting the home with its remarkable natural setting.

From Outdated Structure to Contemporary Statement
The project began as a transformation of an aging brick building whose architectural language no longer reflected its extraordinary location. The intervention carefully reshaped the form, materials, and openings to create a home that feels light, open, and visually aligned with the surrounding landscape.

“Our objective was to unlock the potential of the site,” the architects explain. “The original structure felt inward-looking. We wanted the new design to fully embrace the panoramic views and natural beauty.”

Through strategic structural alterations and façade reconfiguration, the residence now presents a crisp, modern identity.

Framing the Landscape with Glass and Linear Balconies
Large glass façades form the defining feature of the new composition. Expansive glazing stretches across primary living spaces, dissolving the boundary between interior and exterior while framing uninterrupted views of forest canopy and distant hills.

Linear-framed balconies extend outward, reinforcing the horizontal emphasis of the architecture and creating outdoor platforms from which to experience the landscape.

“Glass became the main architectural tool,” the team share. “It allows the scenery to become part of the interior experience, constantly changing with light and season.”
The result is a home that feels elevated and immersed in nature simultaneously.

Timber Cladding and Earthy Integration
To soften the contemporary geometry and root the house within its wooded setting, the exterior is wrapped in timber cladding. The natural material palette bridges architecture and environment, ensuring the modern intervention remains sensitive to its earthy backdrop.

“The timber exterior helps the house sit comfortably within the landscape,” the architects note. “It introduces warmth and texture while complementing the tones of the forest.”

This careful material selection ensures that the transformation feels intentional rather than imposed.

A Landscape-Led Arrival Experience
The approach to Blackheath House is equally considered. A sunken, landscaped pathway gently guides visitors toward the entrance, gradually revealing the home. This subtle procession enhances anticipation while maintaining the privacy of the elevated site.

Inside, the entrance interior opens dramatically, unveiling the full depth of the floor plan and the expansive view beyond. The spatial sequence—from compressed arrival to panoramic reveal—creates a memorable architectural moment.

“We designed the entrance to unfold gradually,” the architects explain. “The moment you step inside, the entire landscape is revealed.”
